Med Surg Unit – 21 Beds

Basic Info :

Unit Type : Medical-Surgical

Beds : 21 total

Average Census : 15-16 patients

Nurse :

Patient Ratio : Typically 1 : 5 (can go up to 1 : 6 but avoided if possible)

Certifications Required :

BLS

Common Diagnoses / Patient Types :

CHF (Congestive Heart Failure)

COPD

Diabetes Mellitus

Hypertension

Post-op Orthopedics

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy recovery

Skills & Duties :

Dysrhythmia reading required

RNs do not titrate drips

Common drip : Heparin (set-rate)

Charge Nurse / House Supervisor :

Daytime charge nurse and night house supervisor do not take patient assignments

They assist with admissions, discharges, and general coordination

Support Staff :

Patient Care Techs (PCTs) assigned at about 1 : 5 ratio; sometimes PCT may cover 7-8 patients

Team nursing approach encouraged

Respiratory Therapy Equipment :

CPAP available

Tele Monitoring :

Telemetry common on the unit

Nurses read and interpret their own telemetry strips (no dedicated monitor techs)

Scheduling :

Block scheduling allowed as able but not guaranteed

Weekend requirement : as needed

No holiday requirement

No on-call or standby requirements

Floating : No floating required

Scrub Color / Dress Code :

Any color scrubs allowed

Orientation :

EPIC training provided if needed
