Mad Science of DC brings hands-on science programs to 100+ schools , 20,000+ students , and 170+ summer camps across the region every year. Our mission is to show kids how amazing science can be through unforgettable STEM experiences.
We are hiring a Director of Operations to run the operational engine that powers all of this a leader exceptional in logistics, scheduling, staffing, systems, and multi-site operations.
This is our highest operational role , designed for someone who loves complexity, builds systems that scale, and thrives in fast-paced environments.
What You'll Lead
Logistics & Scheduling (Core Function)
- Build and manage weekly schedules for programs at 100+ schools
- Assign 3040 instructors (school year) and 80+ instructors (summer)
- Ensure 100% program coverage with minimal last-minute changes
- Optimize instructor travel routes, timing, and resource allocation
- Oversee equipment flow, supply kits, and warehouse coordination
- Maintain a stable, predictable logistics rhythm across the organization
Team Leadership
Lead Senior Instructors, Zone Coordinators, and instructional staffRun training, onboarding, and staff development programsEnsure consistent, high-quality program deliverySummer Operations (High-Volume Season)
Serve as the first point of contact for routine counselor issuesHandle typical parent calls and moderate behavior concernsProvide rapid problem-solving support to staff on-siteSerious behavior or safety issues are escalated directly to the ownerEnsure camps run smoothly, safely, and with high parent satisfactionHiring & Staffing
Own recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboardingBuild and maintain seasonal hiring pipelinesDevelop staffing plans for school-year and summer demandOffice Operations & Culture
Help maintain a positive, energetic, mission-driven office cultureCollaborate with the owner on staff performance trackingLead internal events (team gatherings, holiday events, staff appreciation)Customer, School & Parent Support (School Year)
Resolve operational issues quickly and professionallyProvide program quality oversightSupport the sales team during high-volume periods when neededCompliance & Standards
Maintain background checks, certifications, and safety documentationKeep policies updated and properly documentedCreate and maintain SOPs for key operational processesStrategic Growth Support

Summer (10 Weeks) :
MondayFriday, 8 : 00 AM 4 : 00 PM
Summer includes after-hours availability for urgent scheduling or staffing issues. These situations generally won't take much time, but when they arise, they require quick decision-making. This is primarily availability , not extended work hours. This work can be done remotely.
