The Seasonal Roads Preprofessional will assist with developing GIS maps used to support and take part in the roads maintenance operations of the district. This position will teach operating equipment, performing asphalt and gravel maintenance, and supporting the upkeep of safe, accessible areas for public use.
What You'll Do
- Assist with routine asphalt and gravel road maintenance activities, including seal coating, crack routing, crack filling, sweeping, asphalt patching, gravel application, and pothole repair.
- Operate small motorized machinery and light equipment, including line trimmers, crack routers, blowers, compactor plates, and various hand tools.
- Operate District vehicles, including pickup trucks.
- Utilize GPS equipment to conduct field surveys of preserves and roadway systems.
- Keep accurate records of road conditions, vegetation, and wildlife observations.
- Prepare reports documenting maintenance activities, identifying areas for improvement, and providing input for future planning.
- Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits. Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and procedures. Follow all safety rules related to assigned duties and support the District's safety and risk management program. Maintain a clean, orderly, and hazard-free work area. Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents.
- Maintain a supportive working environment and demonstrate a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.
- Perform other duties as required.
What You'll Need
18 years of age or older at time of hire.Valid Driver's License in good standing.Experience in the operation of maintenance equipment preferred, pursuing or recently completed a degree in landscape architecture, civil engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Pursuing or recently completed a degree in geography, urban planning, computer science, or a related field.Working knowledge of ESRI's ArchInfo and ArcView software, AutoCad software, and Trimble GPS hardware.Strong hardware and software troubleshooting skills.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Working knowledge of ERDAS software preferred.Schedule & Pay
Monday through Friday. 6 : 45 am. - 2 : 45 pm.This position starts around April / May of 2026 and works for approximately 12 weeks.$18 - 20 per hourWork Setting
Position is based out of the Grounds Management Office inside of Blackwell Forest Preserve and requires frequent travel to Forest Preserve sites across the district.Safety Toe Boots are required and reimbursable. Packed lunch and water are required.Apply Today
