Summary
The Supervisor of Outpatient Coding oversees the day-to-day operations of outpatient and professional coding to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance across the revenue cycle. This role is responsible for coordinating all aspects of coding quality, compliance audits, and staff education within the network. The supervisor ensures coding accuracy for optimal reimbursement, data integrity, and quality reporting, while proactively resolving any barriers that delay revenue capture.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Workflow Management :
Supervise daily coding operations, assign workloads, and balance productivity with coder development and competency.
Monitor and report coder productivity against established benchmarks to ensure timely and accurate billing.
Compliance & Quality Audits :
Conduct ongoing coding audits for APC assignments and overall quality.
Analyze audit findings and denial trends, report results to leadership, and recommend corrective actions.
Education & Training :
Stay current with ICD-10 , CPT , and other coding regulatory changes.
Assist in the training and continuing education of coding staff and providers.
Technical Proficiency :
Maintain working knowledge of ICD-9-CM , CPT-4 , HCPCS , government regulations, third-party billing protocols, and revenue cycle trends.
Perform coding and abstracting as needed to maintain workflow efficiency.
Documentation Integrity :
Ensure all coding is based on accurate physician documentation.
Collaborate with physicians, liaisons, and clinical teams to improve documentation quality and compliance.
Process Improvement :
Identify process gaps impacting revenue flow and implement proactive solutions.
Strengthen coders’ knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and coding methodology to ensure ongoing professional development.
Qualifications
Required :
Minimum 5 years of experience in outpatient / professional coding.
Expertise in CPT (including E / M) and ICD-9 / ICD-10 diagnosis coding.
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Proficiency in coding software and EHR systems such as Siemens Invision .
Ability to lead teams, analyze complex data, and manage workflow priorities.
Preferred : Bachelor’s Degree.
Awareness of ICD-9 procedure coding.
Previous supervisory or lead coding experience.
