The unit has 30 beds. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 : 4-5 during days and 1 : 5-6 during nights. Common diagnoses include total joint replacement, spinal surgery, and a variety of abdominal surgeries. Bariatric patients and medical overflow cases are also present. Experience with hemo hemovacs, JP drains, and colostomies is frequently required. Registered Nurses are not required to titrate any drips. Occasionally, there may be heparin drips, PCA pumps, or TPN. A charge nurse is present on each shift, with nights sometimes taking a low acuity assignment. Nurse aides or patient care techs are available with a ratio of 1 : 12. Registered Nurses are only required to troubleshoot respiratory equipment, but do not perform treatments. The unit utilizes remote telemetry packs, with a dedicated monitor tech for interpreting data. Registered Nurses do not read their own telemetry strips. Shifts run from 0700-1930 and 1900-0730. The manager will create the schedule, though block scheduling may be considered based on unit needs. Weekend work is required every other weekend, with holidays as needed. Floating to medical and telemetry units may be required, including assistance with telemetry strips. Scrubs can be of any color. Bedside shift reports are expected. A close-knit and positive culture is promoted within the unit. It is required for candidates to not be employed in any full-time, part-time, or PRN positions with associated facilities. Requested time off must be submitted upfront and may not exceed 7 days for a 13-week contract. Additional requested time off will not be approved after submission. The charting system used is EPIC. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is not required. The care setting is acute. This position is for a Trauma Level 2 environment.
