Job description

Detentions Deputy

The Detention Deputy is responsible for the care and security of all inmates lawfully in the custody of the Sheriff. Performs duties related to the daily operation of the jail.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor and observe all individuals entering the jail to ensure safety and security.
  • Control and restrict access to the jail and other secured areas.
  • Conduct routine interior inspections of the facility and perform inmate checks at regular intervals.
  • Ensure jail security by verifying proper confinement and monitoring the safety of inmates, staff, detainees, and visitors.
  • Process inmate bookings and releases, including handling of bond documentation.
  • Manage inmate cash accounts and regularly update inmate records.
  • Accurately log inmate activity and jail operations on a continual basis.
  • Operate and maintain various equipment including two-way radios, fingerprint scanners, breathalyzers, computers, fax machines, copiers, and telephones.
  • Provide courtroom testimony or hearing appearances as required.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date jail records and filing systems.
  • Perform cell and pod searches after all inmate intakes and releases to ensure areas are free of contraband and weapons.
  • Conduct thorough weekly inspections of all jail areasincluding booking, cells, pods, and work release spaces and document and remove any contraband, report violations of jail rules.
  • Support road deputies, court security, and dispatch personnel with security matters as needed.
  • Escort inmates to court-ordered destinations using approved transport procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully complete a written examination, oral board interview, and psychological evaluation.
  • Vision must be adequate to perform duties, with or without corrective lenses.
  • Hearing must be sufficient, with or without hearing aids, to communicate effectively by phone and radio.
  • Must be physically capable of climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, twisting, and reaching as needed.
  • Must be able to perform basic administrative tasks, including writing, typing, and completing office-related duties.
  • Must maintain an appropriate level of physical fitness to meet the physical demands and essential functions of the position.
  • Physical Activity & Work Environment

  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods during rounds, inmate supervision, or emergencies.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies, including physical altercations or evacuation situations.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate control panels, restraints, and emergency equipment.
  • Ability to physically restrain individuals, when necessary, often requires sudden or sustained physical effort.
  • Ability to perform CPR and basic first aid, including administering emergency care while awaiting medical personnel.
  • Exposure to potentially hostile, aggressive, or unpredictable behavior from inmates.
  • Work in a secure, confined environment with controlled access and limited movement.
  • Potential exposure to bodily fluids, communicable diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Frequent exposure to loud noises, alarms, and radio communications.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Tolerance for high-stress environments and maintaining composure in potentially volatile situations.
  • Notice of Emergency / Disaster Responsibilities

    All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners. To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management trainings and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.
