Job Title : Surgical Technologist (Surgical Tech)nJob Summary : nA Surgical Technologist, also known as a Scrub Tech or Operating Room Technician, is a healthcare professional who assists in surgical operations. They work closely with surgeons, nurses, and other medical personnel to ensure surgeries are carried out safely and efficiently.nnKey Responsibilities : nPreoperative Duties : nnPrepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and equipment.nnEnsure all tools are sterilized and functioning properly.nnAssist in prepping patients for surgery (e.g., sterilizing the incision site).nnIntraoperative Duties : nnPass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.nnMaintain a sterile field to avoid contamination.nnAnticipate the surgeon's needs and respond promptly.nnOperate or assist with equipment such as suction machines or retractors.nnPostoperative Duties : nnCount sponges, needles, and instruments to ensure none are retained in the patient.nnDispose of used supplies and sterilize equipment.nnAssist with applying dressings and transferring patients to recovery.nnAdministrative / Support Tasks : nnMaintain surgical logs and inventory.nnOrder and restock supplies.nnSupport operating room cleanliness and safety protocols.nnQualifications : nCompletion of an accredited Surgical Technology program (typically a diploma, certificate, or associate degree).nnCertification through NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) or NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) preferred or required based on state.nnBasic Life Support (BLS) certification often required.nnStrong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and ability to remain calm under pressure.nnLicensing and Certification Requirements by State (U.S.) : nStatetCertification or Licensure RequirementnMandatory CertificationtnTexastCertification required (CST through NBSTSA).nIndianatMust be certified unless grandfathered.nSouth CarolinatCertification required.nTennesseetMust be certified or currently enrolled in an accredited program.nIdahotCertification required.nNevadatMust be registered and certified.nNew JerseytMust be certified (CST) unless grandfathered.nOregontRegistration and certification required.nVoluntary or Not RequiredtnCaliforniatNot required, but many employers prefer it.nFloridatNot required by state law.nNew YorktNot required, but employers often require certification.nIllinoistNot mandatory, but preferred by employers.nGeorgiatNot required, certification preferred.nNote : Always check with the state licensing board or health department for the most current regulations, as requirements may change.
