Distinguishing Characteristics : This class differs from the higher class of Deputy Fire Chief in that the latter directs and coordinates the overall activities of the department. It differs from the lower class of FireDivision Chief in that the latter directs and coordinates the activities of a division consisting of one or more battalions. Under general direction of the Sheriff's Captain in charge of the Sheriff's Aviation / SAR Unit, supervises and schedules flight crews and operates helicopters in the performance of law enforcement, search-and-rescue, medical evacuation, and firefighting activities; and performs related duties as assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics : This classification is distinguished from the Fire / Sheriff's Pilot by its responsibility for evaluating, scheduling, assigning collateral duties to the latter classification.
Serving at the pleasure of the County's Board of Supervisors and under the general administrative direction of the County's Chief Executive Officer, is responsible for the protection of life and property from fire and other phenomena by directing the activities of the Ventura County Fire Protection District. Distinguishing Characteristics : The County Fire Chief is fully and immediately accountable to the County's CEO and ultimately to the Board of Supervisors for the management / administration of the Fire Protection District. Distinguishing Characteristics : This classification is distinguished from that of Division Chief in that the latter manages multiple battalions or a staff program or branch within the Fire Protection District. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Fire Captain in that the Fire Captain is typically in charge of a fire station, staff program or work unit with reporting responsibilities to a Battalion Chief.
Under direction of a Fire Battalion Chief, commands and supervises the fire suppression, prevention, training, and maintenance programs of a fire station, or assists with the operations of a staff bureau (i.e., Fire Prevention, Training, Support, Personnel) or assigned program / performs related work as required. Under the general direction of the Fire Chief or designee, the Fire Department Professional Standards Administrator leads and directs the Fire Department's internal affairs function. This position is responsible for conducting and supervising impartial investigations of misconduct allegations, line-of-duty injuries, and other complaints involving all Fire Department personnel, both sworn and professional staff.
