Summary
VA Bedford Healthcare System (HCS) is seeking a Dentist with experience and competent in all phases of Periodontics including but not limited to; diagnostic procedures consistent with the practice of Periodontics and Dental Implantology, treatment of mild, moderate, or severe periodontal disease; surgical open flap debridement and osseous recontouring for the treatment of advanced periodontal disease.
Duties
Help
- The individual must be competent in assessment, diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment care in all the above areas. They must be able to manage medically complex patients and provide appropriate periodontal treatment.
- The individual will have experience in teaching. The Periodontist is directly involved with the supervision of the Dental Externs and has the responsibility for the development of the educational program and coordination of the program contents under guidance of the Chief of Dental Service. The Periodontist has oversight of the curriculum, seminar content and clinical experiences. This includes the didactic, and clinical teaching portions of the program.
- The individual must be able to work collegially with other dentists and physicians, and should possess the skills, both interpersonal and professional, to work with residents in Periodontics, other dental specialties and Advanced General Dentistry. Assignment includes advanced understanding and use of the computerized record system.
- Perform all types of periodontal treatment to restore oral health and function; Treat mild, moderate, and severe periodontal disease; Plan and place osseointegrated dental implants.
- Demonstrates proper infection control procedures and Reusable Medical Equipment Protocols Completes annual mandatory Infection Control Training.
- Modifies care as necessitated by patient's age and abilities (patient transfer and position).
- Participates in patient identification and time out per Joint Commission requirements; Monitors patient condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress; Completes annual mandatory patient safety courses.
- Treatment of cosmetic and functional defects resulting from service trauma.
- Dentoalveolar surgery and complex dental extractions, treatment of orofacial infections and the treatment of orofacial trauma.
- Knowledge of the restorative aspects of dental implants and the treatment of peri-implant diseases and conditions.

Dentist Basic Requirements
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note : Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.Additional Requirements : Board Certification, completion of a CODA accredited training program in Periodontics.
Preferred Experience : MS / MSD advanced degree is strongly preferred

Physical Requirements : Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties in a hospital setting under normal and emergent conditions. Light lifting, under 15 pounds; Light carrying, under 15 pounds; use of fingers; both hands required; standing up to 1 hour per day; near / far vision correctable; hearing aid permitted. Environmental factors - working closely with others.
