ME262 : Art of Teaching Music (ATM) II 4 Credits

Art of Teaching Music II (ATM II) is the second course in a comprehensive professional sequence (ATM I, II, III, IV, and Clinical Experience / Student Teaching) designed to prepare future music educators. This course will equip pre-service teachers with pedagogically sound approaches to instruct on the knowledge and skills associated with experiencing, creating, and responding to music in varied secondary school music settings (e.g., general music, technology, popular music ensembles).

Through course assignments, discussion, and clinical practice in varied school music education settings, course participants learn how to create meaningful music experiences that foster individual success, accountability, a sense of community, critical thinking, independence, and life-long engagement with music.

Consistent with tenets of constructivism and critical pedagogy, ATM II fosters a collaborative learning environment that is active, reflexive, and student-centered. The course will explore innovative ways to structure music learning experiences that are responsive to the diverse needs, backgrounds, and interests of secondary students. A significant focus will be placed on examining current thinking, research, and trends in secondary general music education. Furthermore, a substantial portion of this course will address core pedagogical skills - planning, teaching, assessing, and responding - through the practical and engaging framework of modern band.

Responsibilities :

  • Prepare music education students for a general music curriculum and partner with in-service teachers for 10-15 hours of clinical observation.
  • Developing and delivering engaging course content that aligns with the instructional goals and pedagogical philosophy outlined above. This includes preparing lesson plans, lectures, in-class activities, and assignments.
  • Guiding students in understanding and applying principles of constructivism and critical pedagogy within secondary music education contexts.
  • Instructing students in methods for teaching secondary general music, with a specific emphasis on the modern band framework (including, but not limited to, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals, and music technology).
  • Facilitating active, reflexive, and student-centered learning experiences.
  • Assessing student learning through a variety of appropriate measures, providing timely and constructive feedback.
  • Holding regular office hours to provide academic support and mentorship to students.
  • Utilizing the university's learning management system (LMS) for course communication, and posting of materials, and grade reporting.
