Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the departments below for summer 2026 :

Available Roles

Safety, Health & Assurance - Process Safety (Waltham, MA)

Our Process Safety Department at National Grid is tasked with managing and mitigating risks related to major hazard assets, ensuring safe operations involving hazardous materials. This includes maintaining comprehensive Process Safety Information (PSI) and implementing a robust Process Safety Management System (PSMS) to prevent incidents like fires, explosions, and hazardous substance releases. The department is vital in supporting National Grid's mission by promoting a culture of safety, ensuring regulatory compliance, and continuously improving safety practices, ultimately protecting employees, the public, and the environment from potential risks associated with high-risk operations.

As a Gridtern, you will be an integral member of this team during your assignment, with the ability to work on several projects and efforts which you can determine with your manager. Potential tasks and projects may include assisting in the preparation of communications and process safety briefs, contributing to our Safeguard Efficacy project and its related Power BI Dashboard, supporting our Process Safety Electric Implementation efforts, and participating in Process Safety training programs, which may involve travel to our New York offices for a valuable experience.

Options Solutions Engineering (Waltham, MA)

Our Options Solution Engineering team is responsible for developing the most technically innovative and cost-effective solutions tailored to meet specific system needs. This group comprises engineers from a diverse range of power engineering disciplines, including Transmission Line, Substation, Civil / Structural, Protection & Control (P&C), and Equipment Engineering. They focus on early-stage engineering and scope development (stage 4.2 scope) at the front end of the project cycle for initiatives initiated by Transmission Planning & Asset Management (TPAM), Distribution Planning & Asset Management (DPAM), or external interconnection requests.

As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to attend one or more site visits each week with engineers to various substation sites and transmission rights-of-way. Throughout the summer, you will work on a project that aligns with your expertise, focusing on emerging technologies in the utility sector. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineers, gaining insights into various design practices and company engineering standards. Additionally, you will have the chance to shadow other departments of interest, as well as observe the day-to-day tasks performed by the operations and maintenance groups for substation and transmission projects. This internship will provide you with valuable firsthand experience and exposure to the dynamic field of power engineering.

Property Services (Waltham, MA)

Our Property Services team plays a vital role in supporting both facilities and capital projects for over 50 National Grid sites in New England. This summer, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable exposure to our capital processes, our various sites, and how this group supports the daily operations of the company. You will track the performance of EV charging stations and monitor utility consumption at National Grid facilities while learning about our capital project delivery processes and practices.

As a Gridtern, you will assist with projects that involve troubleshooting, clarifying procedures, developing project scopes and cost estimates, preparing close-out documentation, and addressing related financial matters. You will also participate in safety plan reviews and help draft sanction papers. Additionally, you will have the chance to visit sites in Massachusetts to learn more about our customers and facilities. This internship will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of property services within the energy sector and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects.

Environmental - New England (Waltham, MA)

Our Environmental Department plays a vital role in ensuring that National Grid meets its objectives for minimizing environmental impact while conducting business operations. The team is responsible for securing environmental permits and licenses to support utility construction, investigating and remediating properties affected by historical utility operations, and ensuring compliance with all waste, water, and air regulatory obligations.

As a Gridtern, you will engage in various activities that are both educational for you and beneficial to the company. Your project work may include updating and maintaining environmental information within our GIS systems. Additionally, you will have opportunities for site visits to observe permitted construction activities, as well as investigation and remediation efforts. This internship will provide you with valuable insights into environmental management practices within the utility sector and the chance to contribute to meaningful projects that support sustainability initiatives.

Gas Operations Engineering (Waltham, MA)

Our Operations Engineering team plays a crucial role in ensuring gas system safety and customer reliability by conducting regular reviews and providing recommendations for system construction and maintenance activities, proposed customer load additions, and emergency conditions. The team prepares engineering analyses using Synergi hydraulic modeling software to assess the gas system's capability to deliver gas safely and reliably under normal, peak (winter), and contingency / emergency conditions. Collaboration with various internal stakeholders, including the Gas Control Center, Construction & Field Operations, Instrumentation & Regulation, Customer Connections, and Emergency Planning, is essential to our operations.

As a Gridtern, you will gain insights into National Grid and the natural gas business while understanding the department's responsibilities through shadowing and training. You will support the review of Gas Capacity Requests (GCRs) from new customers seeking to connect to the gas network. Additionally, you will work on projects such as updating the department's SharePoint site, refreshing job aids for accessing applications, and assisting with a scanning and indexing project for current paper inspection forms. This internship will provide you with valuable experience in operations engineering within the natural gas sector.

National Grid Partners (Waltham, MA)

Our National Grid Partners (NGP) team acts as the company's corporate venture capital arm, concentrating on assisting National Grid in exploring relevant emerging technologies that align with its long-term objective of leading the transition to a fair, affordable, and clean energy future. They accomplish this by continuously monitoring the startup landscape for companies with compelling technological solutions that can be integrated into our business units and potentially invested in.

As a Gridtern, you will support the NGP investment team's efforts to leverage AI capabilities to enhance our sourcing and due diligence processes for potential investment candidates, as well as support our existing portfolio. You may also assist in developing investments relevant to National Grid's electric and natural gas operating businesses. This internship will provide you with valuable insights into corporate venture capital and the opportunity to contribute to impactful investment strategies in the energy sector.

Gas Construction Welding (Waltham, MA)

Our NE Welding department is responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and compliance of all steel gas pipeline welding in the greater Boston area. Our team consists of welders, engineers, and inspectors with diverse backgrounds from various industries. We oversee the qualification of over 75 welders from union and contractor crews, conducting random testing to address quality issues before they pose potential public safety risks.

As a Gridtern, you will assist with record-keeping of X-ray images, including digitizing physical X-ray films for permanent storage in the company SharePoint. You will also engage in the day-to-day activities of welding supervisors in the field on construction projects throughout our Massachusetts gas footprint. Your duties will include performing visual welding inspections, documenting these inspections, and reporting results to the team. Additionally, you will gain exposure to non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques used to inspect welds for serviceability without damaging them, including radiography (RT), magnetic particle (MT), dye penetrant (PT), and ultrasonic (UT) inspection methods.

Gas Asset Engineering (Waltham, MA)

Our Gas Asset Engineering team is responsible for managing our gas distribution assets, including overseeing pipe inventory and reporting on gas leak data.
