All technical and clinical procedures must be performed within the scope of education and licensure. Appropriate nursing skills must be utilized in the treatment of inmates / residents. The RN attends sick calls with physicians to see inmates / residents. A list of inmates / residents to be examined is prepared. Examining rooms and equipment must be prepared as well. The RN operates pill calls, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies. Licensed Independent Providers are contacted for medication and treatment orders as necessary. Examinations and assessments of new inmates / residents are performed for illnesses or injuries. Inmates / residents who become ill or injured may be referred to emergency rooms or appropriate healthcare facilities. Emergency procedures are performed as needed with notification to Licensed Independent Providers for treatment orders. The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel. Monitoring inmate / resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases is conducted as directed. Guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational / practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff are responsibilities of the RN. Maintaining good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies is essential. Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures are utilized in decision-making. Sound independent judgment is used in meeting responsibilities and performing duties. Regular evaluations of the provision of medical services are necessary to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services. Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained. Assisting with the review of medical files is required to ensure all provided services are documented. Monitoring all potential catastrophic illnesses is crucial. Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary may be directed or required. Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is necessary. Observing and recording inmate / resident behavior is part of the role. The medical unit must be inspected for items that could be used as contraband. Proper health counseling and health education may be provided on an individual or group basis. Assistance with preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records and reports is expected. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal documents is required.
