Summary

\n

GENERAL SUMMARY : \n\n

Assists in pre- and post-procedure care for invasive and noninvasive cardiovascular procedures in accordance with hospital and department established procedures. Responsible for identifying patient needs and priorities for care through assessment, planning and delegating care based on patient needs, executing therapeutic physician or nurse-initiated interventions, and evaluating the patients response to care and progress towards outcomes.

Supervises Licensed Practical Nurses and / or other support staff in the delivery of patient care as described in Nebraska Statues 38.

\n\n

\n\n

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

\n\n

1.

  • Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

\n\n

2.

  • Initiates assessment based on the patients presenting problems or needs including collecting key information from patient, family, laboratory and other medical reports. Determines priorities for care with special consideration given to patient teaching and documents assessment, clinical judgments and related information according to Bryan Medical Center procedures.
  • \n\n

    3.

  • Works closely with other care providers to complete the initial and ongoing assessments of patients and to provide clinical assistance as needed; reprioritizes care based on new information.
  • \n\n

    4.

  • Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as ordered by the physician and consistent with standards of care and practice, nursing division policies and procedures, professional competencies, and with consideration given to risk management and infection control practices.
  • \n\n

    5.

  • Assists with performance of cardiovascular procedures under instruction of a physician.
  • \n\n

    6.

  • Administers medication according to procedure and / or direct orders of physician.
  • \n\n

    7. Schedules, coordinates and may perform outpatient / inpatient testing procedures.

    \n\n

    8. Delegates work to other staff members as needed.

    \n\n

    9. Performs therapeutic nursing interventions consistent with :

    \n\n

    a. Post-op / post-procedure recovery

    \n\n

    b. Arterial and venous sheath management

    \n\n

    c. Dysrhythmia assessment and intervention

    \n\n

    d. Pre-op / pre-procedure assessment and teaching

    \n\n

    e. Intraprocedure assessment and care.

    \n\n

    f. Cardiac stress testing, nuclear stress testing, stress echo cardiograms, cardiopulmonary stress testing and flight physicals.

    \n\n

    10.

  • Documents care based on standards of care and practice and / or clinical priorities including :
  • \n\n

    a. Assessment and ongoing assessment findings

    \n\n

    b. Updated clinical priorities

    \n\n

    c. Therapeutic interventions with attention to patient education

    \n\n

    d. Patients response to interventions and progress toward outcomes

    \n\n

  • Performs discharge planning and teaching; determines the impact of interventions on the patients condition and recognizes the patients progress towards meeting desired outcomes.
  • \n\n

    12. Serves as a role model and mentor to students in the health professions.

    \n\n

    13. Maintains a safe working environment.

    \n\n

    14.

  • Initiates communication with peers and other members of the health care team about clinical priorities of care; reports on patient conditions as appropriate.
  • \n\n

    15. Provides information to patients and families which reduces anxiety and conveys an attitude of acceptance, sensitivity and caring.

    \n\n

    16.

  • Maintains professional relationships and conveys relevant information to other members of the health care team.
  • \n\n

    17.

  • Initiates problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationship with peers.
  • \n\n

    18.

  • Provides direct care to patients as assigned based on patient acuity, needs and qualifications and competencies of self and of other staff members.
  • \n\n

    19. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

    \n\n

    20. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

    \n\n

    21. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

    \n\n

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

    \n\n

    1. Maintains clinical competency as required for position including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patients growth and development needs.

    \n\n

    2. Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to nursing applications and relative practice area.

    \n\n

    3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

    \n\n

    4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

    \n\n

    5. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

    \n\n

    6. Ability to supervise, provide instruction and evaluate the work of subordinate patient care staff.

    \n\n

    7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

    \n\n

    8. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment relevant to changing patient needs, including working with patients with acute, chronic and complex disease process, and those who are dying.

    \n\n

    9. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

    \n\n

    10. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

    \n\n

    11. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

    \n\n

    12. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

    \n\n

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

    \n\n

    Graduation from a School of Nursing with current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act.

    \n\n

    \n\n

    OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS :

    \n\n

    Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required or required within six (6) months of hire.

    \n\n

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    \n\n

    (Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

    \n\n

    \n\n

    (DOT) Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 35 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or 10 to 35 pounds of force frequently, and / or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

    \n\n

    \n\n

    Occasionally required to team lift and move patients who can be up to 420 pounds. Will be required to lift some heavy packages up to 60 pounds. May stand for long periods up to 7.5 hours during regular shift. Potentially severe hazards, as may be exposed to communicable diseases, radiation and chemicals. May be subjected to disagreeable odors on a regular basis. Will be subjected to potentially stressful conditions involving critically ill patients and the interpersonal relationships of coworkers. OSHA Blood borne Pathogen Exposure Category I will be required to practice Universal Precautions. May be subjected to the behaviors of combative or confused patients. Regular exposure to latex.
