Job description
JOB GOAL:

To advance the college’s mission, vision, principles, values and strategic initiatives through continuous improvement decisions.

Pay is $1,304 per credit hour.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, the instructor is responsible for fostering student learning in English for a Kirkwood campus. The instructor must evaluate, record, and report student achievement and progress in assigned courses in accordance with department, division, and College policies and procedures.

Successful ELA instructors have a good foundation in pedagogy, theories of language acquisition/learning, and sensibilities for working with students of other cultural and language backgrounds.
Adjunct faculty positions are temporary, part-time positions scheduled intermittently based on institutional need. Adjuncts are not guaranteed work in any semester and are notified of course assignments prior to each term as courses become available.

  • DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Effectively organize and prepare learning activities for assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate course syllabi and course handouts for each course taught.
  • Evaluate and record student performance/achievement on a regular basis and provide regular student feedback.
  • Participate in student learning assessment projects.
  • Participate in the development and/or execution of departmental tasks and projects in instruction or instructional support.
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate materials, equipment, and supplies to support the learning environment in established department courses.

  • Be able and willing to represent the College in the most positive manner with prospective, former, and current students; clients, suppliers, and the community we serve.
  • Possess the ability to organize and present various concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Manage a classroom setting in a way or manner that is acceptable and consistent with department and College objectives, guidelines, policies, and practice.
  • Assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment when making classroom decisions.
  • Be available on an as-needed basis for student questions and discussions regarding their performance.
  • Possess a working knowledge of personal computers and educational media equipment.
  • Be a creative, energetic, and self-motivated individual who demonstrates leadership and collaborative work habits within the department.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, colleagues, staff, administrators, and the general public.
  • Read, understand, and express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
  • Possess strong human relation skills. Get along with diverse personalities.

  • Prepare for, attend, and facilitate all classes and finals as scheduled.
  • Communicate in advance to staff and dean when class is cancelled, is moved to another location (such as the library), or is taught by someone other than you.
  • Check rosters to ensure that students in your section are registered for your section.
  • Report attendance for financial aid purposes.
  • Respond to students and to their work in a civil and timely fashion.
  • Report midterm grades and final grades accurately and by the published deadlines.
  • Respond to staff questions about scheduling matters.
  • Respond to staff questions for book orders.
  • Respond to staff and administrative communications about individual students.
  • Respond with data for the department assessment projects.

    Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • B.A. in any discipline
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

    • B.A. or M.A. in English, TESOL, Linguistics, or a related field.
    • Previous teaching experience is a plus. Previous experience living and teaching abroad is a plus.
