Job description

Definition

Definition : Under general supervision by the Youth Services Supervisor and / or Manger assists with youth programming and activities for assigned youth development areas : Afterschool Early Enrichment or Cultural. Provides support in areas of education wellness academic development social skills and the Oodham / Piipaash culture for the youth in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Promotes positive behaviors and develops resistance skills in children and adolescents in the Youth Program. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.

Distinguishing Features : The Youth Development Specialist I differs from the Youth Development Specialist II by providing program aide duties for youth activities and events and is an entry level position. This position is eligible for progression requiring familiarity with the program and leveraging professional working relationships.

Essential Functions : Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks knowledge skills abilities and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

Examples of Tasks

Tasks :

  • Provides informal individual and group guidance to youths in the areas of social and emotional health for assigned youth development program areas : After School Early Enrichment and Cultural
  • Supervises children and adolescents during the instructional programs maintains control of classes and handles routine discipline.
  • Assist in the delivery of appropriate age group program for youth in areas of reading math health fitness culture and socialization.

2. Assists with implementing instructional methods and techniques utilizing available resources.

  • Provides daily classroom support in education in life skills and social skills.
  • Assists with small group structure to aid with coping skills development and the building of resistance skills.
  • Provides group and individual instruction of the Oodham / Piipaash language and culture-related activities.
  • Maintains a supportive structure of cultural-related language research and promotes the language and culture of the Oodham and Piipaash.
  • Continually collaborates and identifies Community Members with traditional language skills and cultural knowledge who are willing to assists with language and cultural presentations.
  • 3. Adheres to the monthly schedules and quarterly instructional outlines and related daily lesson plans covering relevant units of study for all components of the program including : Education Culture Wellness and Social / Life Skills.

  • Assists with conducting activities for both groups and individual instructional programs of prevention education to include drug alcohol violence gangs and teen pregnancy.
  • Assists with group physical fitness nutrition and hygiene and diabetes prevention activities.
  • 4. Assist with conducting research compiles materials related to SRPMIC history culture and language to be taught daily.

  • Adapts and develops materials relevant to the arts dances language and customs to help adolescents discover personal interests and develop culturally relevant skills and abilities.
  • Participates in Community cultural events.
  • Supports learning experiences in education by instilling tutoring and / or homework hour.
  • Assist with instruction of monthly lessons in various subjects of Education. Encourages and promotes the importance of education.
  • 5. Creates a fun and supportive atmosphere to encourage and motivate youth participation for various age groups including 4-5 (Pre-K).

    6. Assists the Youth Development Specialists II and III with group programs and activities.

    7. Assists with quarterly home visits as needed to partner and communicate with parents on meeting youths goals behavior education and / or any other concerns.

    8. Writes reports and daily summaries.

  • Maintains files and tracks daily attendance. Inputs computer data as required.
  • 9. Participates in a multi-disciplinary staff model and contributes to program development and ethical behavior.

    10. Drives tribal transportation vehicle (12 passenger van) to transport youth to and from afterschool program activities.

    11. Establishes and maintains an environment that encourages teamwork interdependence and ethical behavior.

  • Establishes and maintains positive and appropriate professional relationships with all youth and parents / guardians.
  • 12. Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance program and departmental operation.

    Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics :

  • Knowledge of the culture customs traditions history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of principles concepts methods and techniques including monthly and quarterly planning crisis intervention and referrals.
  • Knowledge and practical application skills in community based prevention and intervention programs related to drugs alcohol violence and gangs.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures including those associated with the confidential and sensitive information found in youth records.
  • Knowledge of responsibility as a mandated reporter and procedures of fulfilling legal mandate
  • Skill with case management including but not limited to planning scheduling time management and intervention.
  • Skill assessing youths needs and program progress.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with children youths and their families.
  • Skill counseling individuals groups and families.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with SRPMIC co-workers multiple agencies other service providers and the public.
  • Skill operating a variety of standard office equipment including copiers FAX machines and personal computers including MS Office.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely program records according to prescribed standards.
  • Ability to make independent decisions related to youth care program development and intervention.
  • Ability to drive 12 passenger van.
  • Ability to participate in youth activities in camping hiking recreational and other physically challenging activities required.
  • Ability to work non-standard work hours (example : 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and must be available for evening and weekend assignments as directed by supervisor.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education & Experience : A High School diploma or a GED equivalent required.

  • Must obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification within the first six months of employment.
  • Must obtain a Food Handlers Card within the first six months of employment.
  • Equivalency : Any equivalent combination of education and / or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position will be considered.

    Underfill Eligibility : An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19 Underfill.

    Special Requirements

  • May be required to work beyond normal business hours including nights weekends and holidays.
  • Youth Dev Specialist I (Cultural) : Must have demonstrated knowledge of the Oodham and / or Piipaash languages culture and practical application of proper and acceptable cultural protocols
  • Youth Dev Specialist I (Early Enrichment) : Early childhood Development or closely related course of study preferred.
  • Must successfully pass an extensive background / criminal background check including fingerprinting.
  • Employees in and applicants applying for jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the Community Code of Ordinances Chapter 11 Minors Article X. Investigation of Persons Working With Children.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Drivers License.
  • Prior to hire as an employee applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background / fingerprint check.
