Our Program and Who We Are Looking For

Portland Community College seeks one full-time Building Construction Technology (BCT) instructor to teach in person at the Rock Creek Campus, beginning September 2026.

We are looking for a colleague with strong industry experience and instructional expertise in residential construction who nurture safety-centered, hands-on learning environments. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach and model professional hands-on practices in all areas of light frame residential construction. This includes the ability to lift 50 lbs, work from a ladder or scaffolding in both inside and outdoor environments. A typical course format includes 3hrs lectures and 6hr labs. Additional course work to be taught will include : tool and equipment safety, construction math, blueprint reading, materials and methods, and related BCT coursework.

Ideal applicants will show a deep understanding of - and sensitivity to - the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of community college students, as well as the varied abilities and experiences they bring to technical programs.

The successful candidates will be prepared to teach a range of introductory and intermediate BCT courses, contribute to curriculum development, and foster an inclusive, safety-focused learning environment where all students can succeed.

These positions are included in the bargaining agreement between Portland Community College and the Portland Community College Faculty Federation Employees.

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

    How We Determine Initial Salary Placement

    Minimum Qualifications :

  • Hold a Master's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Civil or Structural Engineering or other construction related fields and have a minimum of 3 years of recent full-time experience in residential / light commercial construction industry. Recent teaching experience at the college level or industry training experience, or a combination of teaching at the college level and industry trainer experience, may be substituted, year for year, for recent experience in the residential / light commercial construction industry.
  • OR

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Civil or Structural Engineering or other construction related fields and have a minimum of 4 years of full-time experience in residential / light commercial construction industry. Recent teaching experience at the college level or industry training experience, or a combination of teaching at the college level and industry trainer experience, may be substituted, year for year, for recent experience in the residential / light commercial construction industry.
  • OR

  • Hold an associates' degree in a construction-related field or a Journey Person card , and have a minimum of 5 years of full-time experience in residential / light commercial construction industry, or 7 years of full-time experience in residential / light commercial construction. Recent teaching experience at the college level or industry training experience, or a combination of teaching at the college level and industry trainer experience, may be substituted, year for year, for recent experience in the residential / light commercial construction industry.

    Success Criteria :

  • Demonstrated current knowledge in residential construction practices including concrete work, wiring, roofing, plumbing, general finishes and cabinetry.
  • Maintains clear safety supervision such as modeling proper PPE use, tool handling, workspace organization, and professional boundaries.
  • Effectively adapts instruction in real time to address student questions, skill levels, and observed learning needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and nurture a sense of well-being and belonging in a technical instructional environment with a diverse group of adult learners.
  • Experience working as a team to implement projects, collaborate with industry partners and fulfill department needs.
  • Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($73,911) and Step 3 ($78,408) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.
