The primary duties of the Substation Communication Project Engineer include responsibility for the technical aspects and deliverables of substation communication projects. This person should be an experienced engineer with a good understanding of substation equipment and SCADA functions associated with that equipment. It is required to have knowledge of substation protection and control schemes, RTUs, HMIs, PLCs, I / O devices, communication processors, Ethernet networks, serial communications, LAN / WAN topology, fiber optics, radio communications, communication protocols, and device configuration software. Familiarity with SCADA communication aspects of protective relay settings and software is also required.

  • Complete technical requirements of substation communication projects of basic to moderate complexity.
  • Support project scoping by reviewing existing infrastructure, standards, and providing communication recommendations.
  • Review protection and control schematics from a communication / SCADA perspective.
  • Develop RTU and EMS points lists and RTU data documentation.
  • Configure RTUs, HMIs, I / O devices, meters, PLCs, communication processors, and network devices using proprietary software.
  • Perform testing and troubleshooting of device configurations in a lab environment.
  • Coordinate relay communication ports and data maps with protection engineers.
  • Coordinate EMS database changes with utilities.
  • Provide technical support to field technicians, primarily via phone and email, with on-site support as needed.
  • Conduct quality control reviews of communication projects.
  • Work independently and mentor less experienced team members.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to develop technical expertise and attend relevant training.
  • Assist in developing technical papers or presentations for industry events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in substation communication and SCADA engineering
  • Experience with specific systems and protocols such as Novatech Orion RTUs, SEL controllers, GE / Harris D20 RTUs, and protocols like DNP, Modbus, IEC-61850 / GOOSE
  • Experience with relay test equipment is a plus.
  • Previous experience with utilities or engineering consulting is desired.
  • Some travel may be required; local candidates are preferred.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license
  • Experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and sector-specific design software
