SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT
Under the supervision of the Transportation Director, this position will ensure safe and efficient school bus route planning and scheduling for student transportation to and from school and school events. It also provides office support functions, as necessary, to best serve staff and the community. The ideal candidate would be certified as a driver trainer in the state of Washington or able to obtain certification upon employment.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and determine all pupil transportation routes using transportation software programs, considering factors such as traffic conditions, pupil load size, road hazards, and available vehicles and personnel.
- Prepare and maintain bus routes using the District bus routing software, ensuring that all buses are routed safely and efficiently.
- Immediately report concerns regarding bus safety or hazardous conditions to the Director of Transportation.
- Maintain the bus routing software, ensuring current routes and student information.
- Maintain route maps, including master copies, school copies, and driver copies.
- Combine, split, or consolidate routes when the driver supply is inadequate, and make necessary temporary adjustments for emergencies (e.g., road closings, flooding, etc.).
- Advise school staff, drivers, parents, and administration of route changes, bus changes, late arrivals / departures; and provide primary dispatch communications between the office and bus drivers.
- Respond to requests from any interested person with information concerning routes, stops, schedules, loads, rules and regulations, and other relevant facts.
- Prepare and maintain a database of daily student bussing, activity routes, McKinney–Vento routing, and extracurricular bussing.
- Assist in securing qualified substitute drivers and bus assistants as needed to cover routes in the absence of regular drivers.
- Provide customer service to staff and the community, including answering the telephone, taking messages, greeting and directing visitors, resolving conflicts, disseminating information, etc.
- Schedule and work closely with drivers to assign and update changes to routes (bus stops, bus times, etc.) on a continual basis.
- Collaborate with the district McKinney–Vento Liaison, school counselors, various district staff, and other school districts to provide transportation for homeless and foster children throughout the region.
- Exhibit confidentiality, initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm in performing job functions.
- Perform data entry, word processing, spreadsheet, and database functions.
- Coordinate with staff and outside agencies / vendors to ensure district and / or student needs are met.
- Provide Washington State Certified Driver Instruction to new driver candidates, including classroom and behind-the-wheel training.
- Monitor compliance with state pupil transportation guidelines and other applicable rules and regulations.
- Facilitate an annual training session for all District bus drivers and aides to ensure compliance with the state-mandated bus driver In-Service requirements.
- Maintain transportation staff records related to training and eligibility, ensuring they meet state requirements.
- Assist the director in annually conducting evaluation check rides and route evaluations on each bus driver to ensure all state / district standards are met.
- Provide relief school bus driving when needed.
- Attend the annual ESD 101 “Driver Trainer In-Service” training.
- Compose reports, letters, and written correspondence independently with little or no instruction in a timely and accurate manner.
- Adhere to state transportation regulations and District Policy and Procedures, and utilize independent judgment and sound decision-making for matters not covered by established policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Assist in any special projects / additional duties assigned.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience in transportation service operations in a school system or private industry.Experience using TransFinder Plus or other professional routing software.Prior experience as a school bus driver trainer or delivering training to staff.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent.Possess a valid state driver’s license, including a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements.Possess current State of Washington School Bus Driver’s Authorization.Possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate certifying medical ability to drive a school bus.Pass a pre-employment drug test; undergo random drug testing periodically.Maintain current First Aid / CPR certification.Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance.Completion of all district-required training within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date.Certified WA State Bus Driver Trainer or the ability to obtain certification.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of WA State pupil transportation regulations.Ability to deliver effective and engaging training for new bus drivers.Demonstrate skills in the use of standard office programs, including Microsoft and Google.Possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records and provide timely information to schools and district personnel.Ability to think quickly and have solutions when issues arise with student management, bus overloads, road closures, bus accidents, or other unforeseen barriers to operations.Remain calm, professional, and courteous when working with staff, students, families, and the general public, including instances when faced with an angry or upset individual.Effective oral and written communication skills.Knowledge of payroll practices and procedures, basic bookkeeping functions, and accurate filing skills.Ability to manage and work through multiple complex duties simultaneously.Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills while working effectively under pressure and meeting deadlines in a timely and efficient manner.WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily in an office setting, where the employee is confined to a work area; required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines; must be able to work at a computer monitor for prolonged periods; and must be able to crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, and lift / move objects such as files, boxes, etc. As a secondary role, this position drives a school bus and rides with other drivers for purposes of observation and training. During this time, the employee must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and safely operate district vehicles in various road conditions (snow, rain, ice).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and work year are subject to the needs of the District.
Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed before employment commences. The successful candidate for this position must complete a fingerprinted background check with the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Employment is contingent upon clearance of the background check.
