Job Description Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will serve as a key clinical member of the Hollings Cancer Center Mobile Health Unit team, which delivers essential health services, such as cancer screenings, to underserved communities across South Carolina. The LPN will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary care team to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care, while supporting patient navigation and education to promote early detection and access to treatment.

The LPN II will support clinical operations on the Hollings Cancer Center Mobile Health Unit, ensuring timely access to the full continuum of cancer care-from screening and diagnosis to treatment and survivorship. This role involves direct patient care, coordination of follow-up services, and community outreach.

Responsibilities :

• Coordinate follow-up care with patients, providers, and healthcare facilities.
• Track and follow up on abnormal mammograms and Pap smears.
• Navigate patients through diagnostic workups and transition to oncology navigation upon diagnosis.
• Collect and prepare laboratory specimens in accordance with MUSC Health Policy.
• Collect and document clinical data, including : vital signs, intake / output, vascular checks, weights, and calorie counts.
• Assist with care planning as delegated by the practitioner.
• Administer medications per MUSC Health policy and document patient responses.
• Assess and address patient barriers to care (e.g., transportation, childcare, financial).
• Facilitate communication between patients, families, and care teams.
• Build and maintain relationships with community-based organizations.
• Support data collection and evaluation efforts.
• Perform administrative tasks and attend weekly multidisciplinary breast conferences.
• Implement outreach services, such as Best Chance Network (BCN).
• Promote culturally sensitive education and awareness through community outreach and marketing efforts.

Minimum Training and Education Requirements :

Graduate from an accredited Practical Nurse program with six months of patient care experience required. Ability to demonstrate commitment to patient centered care philosophy as evidenced by effective communications skills, professional demeanor, and excellent interpersonal skills. Ability and motivation to articulate and support departmental philosophy of excellent guest relations.

Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. Effective problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities.Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.Experience working with rural and underserved populations, particularly within the Gullah / African American communities. Compassionate, flexible, and culturally competent.Understanding of financial, cultural, and societal barriers to care.

LICENSURE & / OR CERTIFICATON(S) : Licensure as a practical nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR / AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
