The Paramedic provides patient / family centered care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse when performing technical care procedures in the Emergency Department and operates under the supervision of the Operational Medical Director when in the role of transport Paramedic or call taker. Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary, self-managed work team using a holistic, caring approach to patient care. Performs delegated aspects of age-appropriate patient care and technical patient care skills including basic rehabilitation, phlebotomy, respiratory therapy and EKG under the RN direction. Reinforces patient / family teaching provided by the RN. When working in the capacity of a member of the transport team works as a member of the multidisciplinary care team providing advanced skills as delegated by the operational medical control physician in accordance with established protocols and guidelines. All patient care is provided in accordance with CCMC and Emergency Department policies and procedures

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

Patient Care - Provides direct patient care in all areas of the Emergency department to include Triage, Minor Care, Zone C and may be assigned to the role of Trauma team member.

  • Assist patient with activities of daily living, which includes, but not limited to hygiene, ambulating, feeding and personal care.
  • Places patients on monitors, pulse oximetry and noninvasive blood pressure cuffs.
  • Performs EKG's.
  • Assists RN / Physicians to make assessments by obtaining data and reporting observations promptly and accurately;
  • Follows medical instructions promptly and accurately to the extent possible, within scope, whether instructions are received from the physician or by an ED RN;
  • Collects patient data to include vital signs, temperature, weight and head circumference or other data as directed by the nurse
  • Collects and completes point of care testing, as appropriate, to include Blood glucose (fingerstick), urine, pharyngeal swabs, Urine HCG, Strep tests and 1and 2 step point of care.
  • Applies splints and other orthopedic devices (may include, slings, immobilizers)
  • Provides crutch walking instruction to patients.
  • Transports patients, to include patients receiving oxygen and elevated PEWS, off the unit to ancillary support departments or for admission / discharge, outpatient / surgical procedures. Assists in the transport of patients to telemetry monitored units' transport of patients to telemetry monitored units
  • Performs basic wound care including wound cleansing, irrigation, and preparation for provider; applies and documents basic wound dressings
  • Performs basic fingerstick and phlebotomy functions for patients needing blood sample collection
  • Provides support in Zone C for behavioral health patients needing 15-minute observation, constant observation or 1 : 1 observation and assists in restraints.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the population-specific differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients / families and co-workers.

Emergency Department Operations & Environment :

  • Accurately documents all interventions and patient data in the patient record.
  • Demonstrates basic data entry and data retrieval competency in electronic patient records and / or patient supply systems utilized on unit.
  • Maintains appropriate inventories of unit supplies in patient rooms / bedside stands; and in treatment, utility, medication and linen rooms.
  • Cleans, maintains and inventories unit equipment
  • Performs quality control checks on equipment or supplies as directed by the RN.
  • Utilizes all equipment appropriately, and notifies appropriate team members of equipment or facility breakdown or damage. Assist with miscellaneous tasks, and transportation of medication (including controlled substances) blood, equipment and supplies, as directed by the RN.
  • Assist with routine clerical tasks.
  • Transport Team Paramedic

  • Works under the scope and direction of the operational medical director, utilizing advanced skills with demonstrated competency when in the role of Transport Paramedic
  • Customer Service :

  • Establishes effective relationships with patients, families, staff and external customers / consultants to the team.
  • Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with CCMC STANDARDS
  • Quality :

  • Is accountable for departmental and hospital quality and safety initiatives and goals.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities :

  • None.
  • Acts as a member of the care team and receives delegated assignments from the registered nurse - Emergency Department or Transport. Works under the license of Operational Medical Director when in transport.
  • Qualifications

    Education and / or Experience Required :

  • Education Required : High School diploma or GED required.
  • Completed EMT -Paramedic Program required.
  • Education and / or Experience Preferred :

  • Experience Preferred : Minimum of one year (1) experience in pediatric emergency department as Emergency department technician, preferred.
  • One-year work experience as full-time paramedic, preferred.
  • License and / or Certification Required :

  • CPR - Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association or Military Training Network. Required upon hire and must be maintained current at all times.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification required within 3 months of hire and maintained thereafter.
  • EMT-Paramedic certification, Nationally Registered, preferred.
  • Current EMT-P Licensure, Connecticut, required.
  • Current PALS upon hire and maintained.
  • License and / or Certification Preferred :

  • EMT-Paramedic certification, Nationally Registered, preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

    Knowledge of :

  • Basic Medical terminology, mathematics and measurements
  • Basic understanding of organizations environment of care and infection control policies and procedures
  • Basic understanding of reasons for and techniques for managing aggressive behavior.
  • Understand and follow CCMC policies and procedures.
  • Skills :

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication required.
  • Demonstration of effective listening skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills required. Ability to communicate in English is required (bilingual competency, Spanish preferred)
  • Demonstrates competency in standard clinical procedures as well as unit specific patient management protocols.
  • Ability to :

  • Maintain quality, safety and infection control standards. Learn and follow established protocols to respond in emergency situations. Learn and demonstrate competency in basic data entry, use of collaborative care and safety plans and documentation in the medical record.
  • Work across all levels of the organization effectively.

    About the Team

    Connecticut Children's Emergency Department is a collaborative team of highly trained and experienced emergency medicine team members that provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary pediatric care to children from birth to 22 years of age.
