Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) night shift position requiring a WI or compact RN license and PICU experience.

Responsibilities

Work in an acute care Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with 8 beds and an average census of 4 to 5 patients

Patients include those with respiratory issues, DKA, trauma, surgical, neurological conditions (seizure), overdose, and suicide cases

Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 depending on patient acuity

Use of ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, NAVA, Vapotherm, and Heliox respiratory equipment

RNs run and titrate cardiac, insulin, heparin, and sedation drips

RNs read and interpret their own cardiac strips; no dedicated tele / monitor techs

12-hour night shifts with self-scheduling in a tiered approach; weekends and holidays required on an every-other basis

RNs may be floated to the NICU (if experienced) and may observe in adult areas depending on census

Charting is completed in Cerner, with a transition to Epic planned

Role includes titrating cardiac, insulin, heparin, and sedation infusions, and drawing labs

No nurse aides on the unit; charge nurses take assignments when appropriate

Intensivist not in-house but available within 10 minutes, with residents onsite 24 / 7

Standard orientation includes 1 day hospital-wide and 2 days unit-specific

Clean and professional pediatric-appropriate attire required

First-time travelers and traveler duos are welcome to apply, though duo members will not have the same schedule

No block scheduling permitted

Holiday coverage required on an every-other basis

Requirements

Active WI or compact RN license required by start date

At least 1 year of PICU experience required

Current BLS (AHA) and PALS (AHA) certifications required

Experience caring for intubated patients, running drips, sedation, ICPs, EVDs, and emergency situations required

Must be able to independently draw labs

Ability to read and interpret cardiac strips required

Two professional references required : one supervisor reference within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor reference within the last 3 years

Local candidates within 80 miles considered at a reduced rate

Former employees must have ended employment at least 6 months prior and require approval for consideration
