The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Lead Newborn Screening (NBS) Coordinator opening in Topeka. The Kansas Newborn Screening Blood Spot Program is seeking a dedicated lead follow-up coordinator to help ensure that every baby born in Kansas receives timely and effective follow-up for conditions identified through newborn screening.
This position is ideal for someone passionate about public health, detail-oriented, and committed to improving health outcomes for infants and families across Kansas.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following :
Serve as the initial point of contact for providers and birthing facilities regarding follow- up on the newborn screen for all Mass Spectrometer (MS / MS) related disorders and invalid results. Assist with follow up activities for MISC disorders and unsatisfactory specimens as needed. Lead and coordinate the timely completion of necessary case management tasks for all abnormal results, especially in cases where a specimen has abnormal results for both MS / MS and MISC disorders, including identifying such cases & delegating case management tasks as needed. This may include, but is not limited to, following vetted protocols around following up on preliminary results, notifying providers of an abnormal, unsatisfactory, or invalid result, monitoring repeat status of out-of-range screens, tracking the reported results through resolution (diagnosis excluded or confirmed), and making referrals for appropriate intervention and community services.
Support new employee onboarding by assisting the program manager with training new hires and leading the team on daily follow-up tasks, elevating training deficiencies to the program manager as identified. monitor program data systems related to maintaining day-to-day functionality to ensure adequate and high-quality follow-up service. Provide general recommendations and advise providers, facilities, or the general public on necessary next steps when a newborn screen is reported as abnormal. Identify needed system enhancements and submit proposal / recommendation to program manager. Add out of state births to the case management system as needed. Serve as “primary point of contact” when the program manager is scheduled to be out of the office. With program manager support and review SOP’s for Newborn Screening Follow-Up. Maintain follow-up procedural manual for the lead coordinator position, revising as appropriate to support program efficiency and quality assurance. Elevate critical time sensitive follow-up related issues for team discussion in regularly recurring team meetings. Participates and help facilitate meetings in the Newborn Screening Advisory Council and other program planning activities. Identify trainings and additional supports of the program and relay other relevant program information.
