Produce Department Manager
The Produce Manager oversees the entire operations and staff of the Produce Department including managing the inventory and presentation of fruit, vegetables and merchandise ensuring maximum profitability and providing excellent customer service.
Ability to work in every area in the department to ensure proper staffing and coverage of duties, which includes but is not limited to :
- Ensure customers are taken care of by answering questions regarding products sold within the department; Remain knowledgeable about the products sold within the department
- Ensure price changes in department scales are done when needed
- Maintain refrigerated cases with appetizing displays of products for sale
- Verify that display cases, coolers, refrigerators and freezers are at the proper temperature
- Routinely conduct thorough cleaning of produce display cases and racks to prevent odor and bacteria growth
- Cut, weigh and package various produce items such as papaya, melons, pineapples, etc.
- Portion out, weigh and package various produce items such as apples, beans, etc.
- Place produce in various containers such as trays wrapped with plastic, plastic bags with twist ties or clear plastic containers with lids for proper display
- Stock and rotate department products to ensure freshness and date control
- Operate department equipment and tools such as sharp knives, scales, and wrapping device
- Retrieve, load and unload products and merchandise onto cart to move from back storage room to prep room
- Retrieve, load and unload products and merchandise onto cart to move from prep room or storage area to display area
- Keep work area clean, orderly, and free from safety hazards; Maintain awareness of floor conditions; ensure all safety measures are taken to protect customers, vendors and employees
- Report all accidents promptly to store manager on duty
- Promptly report maintenance and safety issues to manager on duty and arrange for repairs
- Perform other work-related duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position
May perform general cleaning duties such as mopping and sweeping
Assist produce managers from other stores with training when needed
Change and / or replace labels or paper in departmental equipment
Assist store manager on duty in other departments when needed
Minimum requirements - education and / or experience :
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus some college-level courses; minimum of 18 years of age and previous supervisory and produce department experience required

In this position, there is the possibility of using gloves, knives, case cutters, wrapping device, scale, stock cart, powered and manual pallet jack, coolers, ice machines, baler and cleaning supplies and equipment. Chemicals may include sanitizer, degreaser and chlorine diluted with water. The use of a powered pallet jack requires safety training; incumbent shall not use a powered pallet jack without such training.
