S&T Research Intern (Fall Submission Date : July 20, 2025)

Do you have a burning curiosity about the latest developments in cyber security, neuroscience, counterterrorism technology, and future trends that affect security and society? The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, nonpartisan science and technology policy research institute in Arlington, Virginia, is seeking interns who want to be at the heart of the debate about science and technology policy in the US. We offer an opportunity to assist with research, writing, planning, and organizational activities that support the Institute's mission to provide a forum for the free exchange of ideas for the purpose of informing public policy.

S&T Policy Internship Description :

As a member of the S&T team, you will have the opportunity to conduct impactful, timely research and participate in high-level events at the heart of Science and Technology debates. You will learn valuable life-long skills to improve your research, writing, and critical thinking directly applicable to the professional world. The schedule is very flexible with the expectation that you will work 10-20 hours per week. The internship typically lasts the duration of an academic semester, but exceptions can be made depending on the circumstances.

Intern Duties :

Hardworking and bright interns will have the opportunity to perform research, attend Institute seminars / conferences, and develop personal academic interests. Interns will attend weekly research review sessions and provide meeting minutes, produce literature review documents, draft factsheets as directed, and suggest new research topics for preliminary research. Other opportunities include Institute event planning / coordination, proofreading / editing of reports for publication, and providing support to staff when needed.

Requirements :

Individuals enrolled in, or having completed university studies with a specific interest in science and technology, public policy, and national security with a 3.25 or higher GPA are encouraged to apply. We are seeking interns from diverse academic backgrounds (undergraduate, graduate, or recently graduated), including those with experience in the sciences, engineering, political science, legislative affairs, international affairs, security studies, history, public policy, operations research, robotics, neuroscience, foreign languages, regional studies, and ethics. Candidates should have research experience, writing and editing proficiency, good database skills, strong MS Office skills and Internet research skills. Excellent organizational and communication skills are mandatory as is the ability to prioritize a heavy workload. Professional attire is required.

Academic Credit :

We are more than happy to assist students with receiving academic credit through their respected Institution upon successful completion of the internship. Some educational institutions require prior approval before the start of an internship for academic credit. It is the responsibility of the student to check with their institution to be sure they meet any requirements before they accept a position.
