Job Summary :

The Director of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) leads the administrative support office for the IACUC. The Director is responsible for the leadership, strategic direction and compliance of the CU Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus IACUC Office, in close coordination with the Office of Laboratory Animal Resources (OLAR) and the Office of Environment Health and Safety (EHS), as well as other key compliance offices that would be relevant to animal research activities for the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and University of Colorado Denver. This position is primarily in-person with some hybrid work possible over time.

IACUC : The individual serving in this position has administrative responsibilities for ensuring regulatory compliance for issues involving the care and use of animals in biomedical research and provides support for the IACUC mission. The IACUC is a federally mandated committee that is responsible for oversight of the entire animal care and use program at CU Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus. The IACUC ensures humane treatment of all animals used in biomedical research through review of protocols and research activities conducted in campus facilities.

Key Responsibilities :

Compliance Responsibilities : 30%

Assures regulatory compliance for the use of animals, biological hazards and radioactive materials in biomedical research. Ensure that all policies, procedures and guidance are compliant with the applicable regulatory frameworks and that the documentation is regularly updated to reflect practice.

Provides expert advice to the Administration, Faculty and Staff of the CU Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus regarding regulatory compliance for the use of animals, biological hazards and radioactive materials in biomedical research.

Serves as a resource to the Institution, Investigators and the IACUC, IBC and RSCs regarding current and developing regulations.

Assures policy decisions of the IACUC, IBC and RSCs are in compliance with all federal and state regulations and guidelines.

The animal use program has been AAALAC International accredited since 1973. This position is responsible for coordinating and drafting the application, program description, coordinating the triennial site visit, and ensuring that that key components of the accreditation program are routinely incorporated into the program, including all relevant mandatory and suggestions for improvement.

Work with research teams, core resources and central administration offices to ensure that all parties are meeting their regulatory needs and understand their roles and responsibilities.

Coordination across compliance offices to ensure any compliance issues are effectively managed and appropriately reported as per the institution's assurance and other requirements.

Liaise with federal agencies to ensure that the program remains in good standing with all assurances and reports, including all annual reports as required.

Coordinate with legal counsel and senior leadership to facilitate document requests via CORA, etc.

May serve as a spokesperson for the IACUC as necessary.

Strategy and Metrics : 30%

Develop a strategic plan for the program that aligns with the strategic goals of the VC for Research and accompanying key performance metrics.

Develop the staff to optimize the tools associated with process improvement practices such as Lean, Six Sigma, etc. in coordination with our internal operational excellence partner.

Draft reports, institutional policies and procedures for efficient IACUC, IBC and RSCs function and regulatory compliance.

Prepares documents, correspondence and acts as liaison for IACUC, IBC and RSCs, internal administrators and external regulatory agencies and accreditation bodies (OLAW (NIH); OBA (NIH); USDA; FDA; CDPHE, AAALAC).

Develop tools and resources to track metrics and tools to provide transparency and research teams

Administrative Responsibilities : 20%

Facilitates and co-ordinates the activities of the IACUC, ensuring IACUC staff cross-training as well as coordinating and collaborating, as applicable, with other campus compliance committees (IRB, IBC, RSCs)and with the Investigators.

Attends all IACUC meetings, working with the IACUC Chairs to develop the agenda, provide expertise on meeting procedure and regulatory requirements, and ensure meetings are efficient and effectively run.

Maintains records that document in writing the decisions and operations of the IACUC in compliance with federal regulations and oversight bodies guidance.

Ensures accurate, timely and complete paper and computer records documenting that IACUC, IBC and RSCs protocols are in compliance with federal regulations and oversight body guidance requirements.

Ensures that protocols are reviewed, as necessary, to comply with federal assurances to include grant-protocol congruency or other requirements.

Oversees all financial and operational aspects of the IACUC Office.

Liaise with other compliance offices, OLAR and EHS to ensure effective communication, and coordination of reviews and approvals to efficiently move research forward in a timely manner.

Training Responsibilities : 20%

Provides orientation and training for new IACUC members as well as research teams needing to utilize the various committees.

Collaborate to ensure that the key elements of the program are appropriately reflected in responsible conduct of research training.

Works in conjunction with the IACUC Committee, IACUC Chairs, OLAR, EHS, and other campus stakeholders to ensure that an appropriate training program is available for research personnel working with animals to meet all federal regulations and policies, as well as accreditation standards

Develop and maintain effective resources such as website, communications, training to support research teams navigate, as well as meet, the regulatory requirements.

Work Location :

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications :

A bachelor's degree in basic or environmental sciences, public health, public administration, social / behavioral sciences, physical sciences, nursing, healthcare, finance, accounting, business administration, business, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

The position requires 10 Years extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility in an academic setting, with experience managing research studies.

Experience in research compliance and federal regulations regarding the use of animals in biomedical research.

3 years of the required experience must have included experience in a supervisory capacity.

A combination of education and related technical / paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications :

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in basic or environmental sciences, health, public or business administration, or related field.

Experience managing aspects of an animal program

Service on committees responsible for regulatory oversight

Certification as a Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

Anticipated Pay Range :

The starting salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $120,937 - $145,000
