PURPOSE :

The job of a Secondary Teacher is to facilitate student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress / activities / outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of students providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Essential Functions

The CTE Music Production / Sounds Engineering, Band & Choir Teacher is responsible for providing a comprehensive music program that includes instrumental, vocal, and music technology instruction. This position prepares students for performance opportunities, further education, and career pathways while fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.

Must adhere to the CTE program standards set by the Superintendent of Public Instruction for Career and Technical Education in Washington State.

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Design and implement a wide variety of instructional activities that meet the needs of students with varying abilities and talents.
  • Plan and teach music production curriculum aligned with Washington State CTE Information Technology standards, including instruction in DAWs (Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools), recording techniques, editing, mixing, and production workflows.
  • Teach choral singing, music notation, reading, and listening skills.
  • Teach instrumental music, including brass, woodwind, and percussion techniques, and a variety of band literature styles.
  • Recruit students for band, choir, and music production programs.
  • Help students develop performance skills and confidence in public settings.
  • Prepare students for school concerts, community performances, competitive events, and festivals.
  • Use and update approved course frameworks
  • Program Leadership & Management

  • Direct and rehearse concert band, pep band, jazz ensemble, marching band, choirs, and small ensembles.
  • Select culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate repertoire for ensembles.
  • Organize and maintain a large inventory of instruments, uniforms, instructional materials, music library, and recording equipment.
  • Manage and advise students in the Sound Studio leadership club or similar student-led music technology activities.
  • Plan, organize, and lead concerts, festivals, tours, and other public performances.
  • Student Learning & Assessment

  • Assess and evaluate student performance, achievement, and progress; adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Provide timely feedback to students and communicate progress to parents / guardians.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records.
  • Provide opportunities for students to integrate performance and production skills into cross-disciplinary projects and portfolios.
  • Provide student leadership opportunities (in and outside of the classroom) for further growth and professional development (CTSO)
  • Provide dual credit / articulate classes with post-secondary education
  • Provide workbased learning opportunities in all CTE classes
  • Design learning experiences and assessments that allow students to demonstrate learning
  • Promote integration of academic skills and specific CTE curriculum for relevant career preparation
  • Professionalism & Collaboration

  • Establish and implement clear classroom procedures, routines, and expectations in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Participate in team planning focused on instructional practices and student learning.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and professional learning opportunities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and community partners to enhance program quality and student opportunities.
  • Lead and / or participate in CTE advisory committee meetings
  • Attend state-sponsored, required workshops and conferences
  • Manage and collaborate with post-secondary partners in learning

  • Develop and maintain a safe and effective learning environment.

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Skills

  • Proficiency in audio production software (Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools), recording equipment, and live sound systems.
  • Strong instrumental and vocal conducting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple music programs simultaneously, including music production, band, and choir.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Skilled in controlling and motivating students, maintaining accurate records, and adhering to safety practices.
  • Proficient with technology tools including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Skyward, and other education-related applications.
  • Knowledge

  • Knowledge of state and federal laws governing public education, Washington State CTE standards, and music program requirements.
  • Understanding of stages of child development and age-appropriate instructional practices.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures for classroom, rehearsal, studio, and performance environments.
  • Familiarity with instructional design for both performance-based and technology-based music programs.
  • Understanding of diverse musical traditions and culturally responsive teaching strategies.

  • This position requires the employee to transport students so annual van / transportation training is required.

  • Positively impact the quality of Washougal's music and CTE program offerings through innovative instruction and program leadership.
  • Working Environment

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands : Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

    Experience :

  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience with high school students.
  • Demonstrated experience in the field(s) of Music Production
  • Demonstrated experience as an Advisor to student clubs
  • Education : Bachelor's degree and Work Experience per RCW

    Certificated & License Requirements

  • Valid Washington State (OSPI) Teaching Certificate with a Music endorsement.
  • CTE endorsement in Communication Technology (Vcode V100100) - (or ability to obtain within 2 years)
  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Audio Engineering, Music Technology, or a related field.
  • Valid First Aid / CPR / AED Certification is required
