The Oral Maxillofacial Surgery dental officer serves as a practicing dental specialist who performs the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCMENT and will remain open until March 31, 2025. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be February 12, 2025, with subsequent cut-off dates every 2 weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification / licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Dentist Basic Requirements :
- A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed. (2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
- Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
- Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note : Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience : Preferred experience includes current, active experience in the surgical management of complex patients with diagnosis of : (1) TMJ disorders requiring joint reconstruction, (2) soft tissue infection, (3) osteoradionecrosis, (4) medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws, (5) dentofacial deformity requiring orthognathic surgery, (6) obstructive sleep apnea requiring maxillomandibular advancement, (7) oral and maxillofacial pathology requiring resection and reconstruction, and (8) missing teeth requiring major and minor bone grafting and advanced dental implant surgical techniques. The candidate must be willing to teach and mentor R5 and R6 OMFS trainees. Previous VA experience within residency or post-residency is preferred.
Requirements : Have successfully completed an American Dental Association (ADA) approved residency program in oral maxillofacial surgery.

Physical Requirements : Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
