Overview

Research Technical Manager 1 – Fabrication at Dean of Research, Stanford, California, United States. nano@stanford is the largest shared research facility at Stanford University, formed by the merger of the Stanford Nano Shared Facilities (SNSF) and the Stanford Nanofabrication Facility (SNF). We are an open-access facility that supports cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research and education in nanoscale science and engineering. Supported by a team of dedicated staff, nano@stanford offers tools, infrastructure, training, support, and collaboration necessary to develop researchers at all levels to succeed in their research endeavors.

Position Summary :

The Research Technical Manager 1 – Fabrication oversees daily operations in a shared nanofabrication environment, managing staff and user services to ensure safe and reliable access to advanced tools. This position provides technical leadership and training, coordinates cross-departmental projects, and serves as the first point of escalation for operational issues. The RTM 1 evaluates emerging technologies, recommends improvements to service operations, and implements best practices in alignment with University policies. Working closely with faculty, students, and external partners, this role ensures that facility operations support cutting-edge research and long-term institutional goals.

Responsibilities

Provide strategic planning for own work group; participate with senior managers in higher level strategic planning. Communicate operational objectives and assignments and delegate to staff.

Manage the daily operations of an assigned area(s) which include recruiting, hiring, training, developing evaluating and setting priorities of staff, coordinate business, technical, and educational activities for direct reports.

Oversee interdepartmental activities, projects and efforts by applying advanced technical and professional knowledge. Serve as the initial managerial escalation point for problems from clients and other staff.

Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources. Oversee preparation of periodic financial and technical reports and operating plans.

Interface with clients to determine project requirements. Establish service level agreements with clients.

Monitor scientific, engineering, and / or technology trends and evaluate emerging technologies to recommend for adoption and implementation.

Communicate and implement policies, procedures, best practices, recommendations and guidelines compliance with established University administrative policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

Education & Experience :

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Experience leading or overseeing the work of technical staff.

Understanding of relevant scientific, engineering, or technical disciplines.

Ability to problem solve.

Ability to synthesize and articulate technical and scientific methodologies, specifications, and information.

Experience leading scientific, engineering, or technical research projects or programs.

Knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, methodologies, and resource management principles.

Ability to work and communicate effectively with others.

Strong customer relationship and consensus building skills.

Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.

Ability to resolve issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives in a collaborative culture.

Physical Requirements

Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work, use a telephone and use light / fine grasping.

Occasionally write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Rarely stand, walk, sort, and file paperwork or parts.

Onsite / Hybrid :

The expected pay range for this position is $159,889.00 to $182,869.00 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate including but not limited to geographic location, knowledge, skills and abilities, relevant education, depth and breadth of experience, performance; as well as other business and organization needs such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the minimum qualifications, departmental budget availability, and market and internal equity across the unit, department and reporting relationships.
