Description : Position Summary
The Health Information Management (HIM) Director is responsible for the overall management, integrity, and security of all patient health information within the organization. This role ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, including HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 (Confidentiality of Substance Use Disorder Patient Records), and Joint Commission standards. The HIM Director oversees all aspects of health record processing, release of information, data integrity, privacy, and compliance — supporting quality patient care and operational excellence in a behavioral health environment.
Essential Functions
- Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures related to health information management, confidentiality, and documentation standards.
- Oversee the collection, storage, retrieval, and maintenance of medical records (paper and electronic) to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA , 42 CFR Part 2 , Joint Commission , and state mental health regulations .
- Supervise HIM staff, including record clerks, analysts, and ROI specialists; provide training, performance evaluations, and ongoing education.
- Manage processes for record completion, deficiency tracking, and provider documentation compliance .
- Lead the release of information (ROI) function, ensuring proper authorization, verification, and tracking in accordance with privacy laws.
- Collaborate with clinical, quality, and administrative leaders to support audits, performance improvement initiatives, and risk management.
- Oversee record retention and destruction processes in compliance with regulatory timelines.
- Monitor data quality and integrity within the EHR; identify and correct errors in demographic, clinical, and administrative data.
- Maintain accurate reporting of patient volumes, documentation compliance, and other key HIM metrics.
- Serve as the facility’s Privacy Officer or HIPAA Liaison as designated, ensuring adherence to privacy and confidentiality standards.
- Prepare for and support licensing, accreditation, and payer audits .
- Participate in leadership meetings, compliance committees, and survey readiness activities.
Requirements :
Education / Experience / Licensure Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Administration, or related field required.Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential required (active and in good standing with AHIMA).Minimum of five (5) years of progressive HIM experience, including two (2) years in a supervisory or management role.Experience in behavioral health, psychiatric, or substance use disorder treatment setting preferred.Strong knowledge of HIPAA , 42 CFR Part 2 , Joint Commission standards , and state documentation requirements.Experience with EHR systems and HIM software; proficiency in data reporting and analytics tools.Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Office or hybrid setting within a behavioral health facility.Occasional travel between facility locations may be required.Regular working hours with occasional evening or weekend assignments to meet deadlines or audit needs.
