Ops Health Support Aide
The School Health Aide, under the supervision of the Registered Nurse Supervisor (RN), provides school health services to students, staff, families and school visitors. This school health position will work a 10-month school year calendar, and 4 weeks over the summer with time off during Thanksgiving break, Winter Break, Spring Break, and the summer (except for 2 weeks in June and 2 weeks in July). In this position you will assist in the delivery of health services to public school students, for the improvement of their health status with the goal of optimal health so health issues will not interfere with their education at school. After a planned orientation to familiarize the employee with the Leon County Health Department, the employee will be able to function as a paraprofessional in the school health room setting under the close oversight of the Registered Nurse Supervisor. Responsibilities and duties include maintaining a cooperative, caring relationship with students and their parents / guardians, school staff, and Leon County Health Department staff / supervisors.
Duties are as follows :
- Triages student complaints, observe their health status, provide comfort measures, first aid, and / or CPR to ill or injured children following the regulations and procedures established by the Leon County Public School System, the Leon County Health Department, and the Florida State Department of Education.
- Implements federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures related to school health services.
- Implements laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to control communicable disease within the school setting.
- Maintains daily, monthly, and yearly statistics on health room services for reporting purposes.
- Performs G-tube feedings, flushes, colostomy care, and other specialized care as needed.
Perform clerical duties regarding health services that include :
Organize, file, and maintain health information in a confidential manner.Documentation of health services provided.Assist the school nurse with students' health record review and follow up, using emergency clinic cards.Administers medication to students per policy and procedure, maintaining student medications and records per policy and procedure.Assists with blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration, and carbohydrate counting for Diabetic students.Identifies and documents students with health problems and refers students to the school nurse.Enters services provided to each student in their individual health record on FOCUS.Communicates necessary medical information in a timely manner to parents / guardians, the school nurse, and appropriate school personnel while maintaining confidentiality.
Maintains emergency procedure information for students and staff.
Maintains a back-up notebook in the event of absence or technical difficulties.
Establishes and maintains open communication and a cooperative relationship with students, staff, parents, and community.
Maintains a clean, safe, and adequately stocked health room.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Ability to accept supervisory direction.Ability to perform specialized medical procedures for students after receiving child specific training and delegation of task by the supervising RN. (i.e.) Insulin administration, blood glucose monitoring and / or CPR.Ability to perform specialized medical procedures for students after receiving specific training and delegation of task by the supervising RN. (i.e.) g-tube feedings, flushes, colostomy care and other specialized care.Ability to establish and maintain effective communication, both orally and in writing, with school administrators, central office personnel, faculty, staff, parents, and students.Ability to provide a supportive atmosphere for students and staff while assuring appropriate health room use.Ability to communicate and listen effectively.Ability to communicate effectively in writing.Ability to interview students to obtain health information.Ability to work independently without direct supervision.Basic knowledge of computers and data entry.Knowledge of HIPPA guidelines for student's medical records.Where You Will Work : Gretchen Everhart School
