Are you safety-minded, detail-oriented, and looking for a hands-on career where every day is different? Midwest Energy & Communications (MEC) is hiring a Line Locate & Operations Technician, with primary responsibilities in line locating.

In this role, you'll be on the front lines protecting MEC's underground facilities, supporting construction projects, and helping keep contractors, customers, and the public safe. It's a great fit if you enjoy working outdoors, solving problems in the field, and delivering excellent customer service as part of a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

What You'll Do

As a key member of our Operations team, you will :

  • Receive and process MISS DIG requests; accurately mark MEC underground facilities or clear tickets when no facilities are present.
  • Prioritize and complete locates based on emergency status and location.
  • Perform joint meets with contractors and maintain professional communication in the field.
  • Assist with pole number field checks, mapping verification, installation, and updates.
  • Safely operate MEC vehicles and equipment; use hand tools to complete accurate documentation and fieldwork.
  • Assist with warehouse tasks, including receiving and unloading deliveries.
  • Prepare and deliver materials to field staff and provide support with overhead and underground work.
  • Follow all MEC safety standards, OSHA regulations, and RUS specifications; attend required safety meetings.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency locate requests as needed to support system reliability and public safety.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, able to lift 50+ lbs., and stand for extended periods.
  • Skilled with hand tools; strong organizational skills; able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to solve problems by identifying anomalies or conflicting information between field conditions and utility maps.
  • Strong attention to detail in order to recognize subtle changes in signal strength or environmental factors that affect readings.
  • Class A CDL, medical examiner's card, and forklift certification required (or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire).
  • Must be available to respond to after-hours emergency locates and assist with storm restoration efforts when needed.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with utility locating or related fieldwork.
  • Familiarity with the National Electric Code (NEC), NESC, OSHA regulations, and RUS specifications.
  • Customer service experience and ability to interact with contractors and the public.

    Job Overview

  • Employment Type : Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Starting Wage : $28.64 / hour (per union contract), with step increases every six months, topping out at $35.81 / hour
  • Benefits : Comprehensive insurance with minimal cost sharing, plus a 401(k) with 9% employer contribution
  • Paid Time Off : Accrue PTO immediately upon hire; by year two, equivalent to 24 days annually, plus paid holidays
  • Work Shift : Day shift, weekdays, with occasional overtime for emergencies
