The Cook is responsible for food and nutrition support for University of Saint Mary’s of the Lake (USML) Seminarians & community as well as food preparation and service for other banquet and receptions hosted by USML. Coordinates and participates in the effective and efficient preparation and service of high-quality meals under safe and sanitary conditions.
- Essential Job Functions

- Responsible for day-to-day operations including hands on execution.
- Prepares meals, and banquets assigned as scheduled.
- Responsible for actively Greeting and creating a welcoming professional environment to everyone.
- Demonstrates and creates awareness of safety practices for self and others by adhering to safety work procedures, food hygiene protocols, sanitation and handing guidelines.
- Promotes teamwork and quality service through active communication and coordination.
- Set-up and prepare for meals for the next day.
- Compliance with sanitation guidelines.
- Assists Production Manager and Director
- Adapts to changing conditions and shift schedules.
- Customer service Centric focus.
- Other duties as assigned by Director.
- Education and Experience
- Valid driver’s license.
- Minimum 3-5 years experience high volume kitchen.
- Minimum 1-2 years Banquet / Reception experience or other relevant experience.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Supervisory and / or management experience.
- Working knowledge of MS Office, including Excel, and Word.
- Ability to speak, read and write English fluently; other languages (Spanish) preferred.
- Problem solving, reasoning, analytical (mathematical- basic math) skills, good judgement.
- This is not a training position, 3-5 years experience required.
- Up-to-date Illinois State Sanitation Certificate.
- Basset certified preferred.

- Work Environment
- This position does not have a set schedule. Hours will be based on business needs and relief for other cooks. Flexibility is a must for this role specifically associated with working hours. Working hours may / will include; early and / or evening shifts (not one or the other, could be both), weekends, and holidays.
- Will be exposed to adverse weather conditions including rain, snow, cold and hot temperatures.

- Physical Abilities
- Ability to stand, sit, or walk for extended periods of time.
- Mobility and physical exertion; duties involve moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to lift 30 pounds over head
- Safely climb a step ladder.
- Work in an environment that is demanding and physical with fluctuating temperatures.
- Work overtime as needed
