Public Utility Technician
The Public Utility Technician for the Town of Wytheville is responsible for the construction, maintenance, operation, repair, and replacement of Town owned and operated infrastructures related to the distribution of municipal drinking water and collection of sanitary sewage within Town limits and Town owned and operated systems extending into Wythe County. Works under the close supervision of the Public Utility Crew Leader assigned to the Technician or Public Utility Supervisor in the absence of the assigned Crew Leader.
Entry level required minimum qualifications include graduation from high school education or GED equivalent and a valid state driver's license which is always maintained in good standing. At least twelve (12) months of experience directly related to water distribution and sanitary sewer construction, maintenance, operation, repair and replacement. Prior ability to operate tools and equipment necessary to perform duties. State CDL driver's license which is valid and always maintained in good standing preferred.
Necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities include the ability to work hours in excess of normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department emergencies and / or support other Town departments during Town-wide emergencies. Ability to work a varied work schedule sometimes outside of normal working hours as required. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time and under a variety of climatic conditions. Ability to understand, follow and carry out specific oral and written instructions while complying with Department and Town of Wytheville policies and procedures. Ability to work while adhering to established safety protocols including use of appropriate PPE as provided. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Must have a telephone or mobile phone that can be reached in case of an emergency call out.
