This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 13.

Position Summary

The Carpenter builds, installs, and maintains scenic elements and effects for all Guthrie productions, providing a visual foundation for each production. This position will create, produce, and provide scenic elements that meet the needs of the show, designer, director, and actor. The Carpenter also assists in the maintenance and upkeep of the shop and storage areas to provide a safe and efficient work environment. The typical schedule is Monday – Friday, 7 : 00 a.m. – 3 : 30 p.m. This position works 40 hours per week and is guaranteed a minimum of 44 work weeks per fiscal (September 1 - August 31) year.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Construction, Installation and Maintenance of Scenery & Effects

• Build, create, modify and install scenery, effects and rigging to convey the designer’s vision, meet the functional requirements of the play and ensure durability and safety standards.
• Interpret design and working drawings.
• Work individually or as part of a team on projects as assigned.
• Maintain a running dialogue with the Scene Shop Coordinator, fellow Carpenters and TD staff.
• Maintain expected levels of craftsmanship and artistic excellence.
• Become familiar with design concepts and construction drawings in order to efficiently address questions from overhire staff.
• Transition between tasks and projects when designs or priorities shift.
• Create prototypes, when necessary, to determine the most appropriate construction method and material.
