POSITION TITLE : EMT-Basic and Firefighting Instructor (Adult Education / Career Center)
REPORTS TO : Program Director and Lead Instructors
JOB SUMMARY :
The EMT-Basic and Firefighting Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction to adult learners enrolled in the EMT-Basic and Firefighter I & II programs at the Career Center. This position combines classroom teaching, hands-on skills training, and field / clinical supervision to prepare students for state and national certification. The instructor ensures compliance with Missouri state regulations, the National Registry of EMTs, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, and NFPA standards.
QUALIFICATIONS : REQUIRED
- Current Missouri EMT-Basic license and National Registry EMT certification (or equivalent recognized by the Missouri Bureau of EMS).
- Completion of a Missouri-approved EMS instructor training program that meets or exceeds the U.S. DOT EMS Instructor Curriculum.
- Firefighter II certification recognized by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety.
- Fire Service Instructor I certification (or higher) recognized by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety.
- Minimum of two (2) years documented field experience as an EMT and as a firefighter.
- Strong knowledge of adult education methods and effective instructional strategies.
- Ability to demonstrate and evaluate both cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills.
PREFERRED
Fire Service Instructor II certification or higher.Additional certifications such as Fire Officer, Hazardous Materials Technician, or Driver / Operator.Previous teaching or training experience in EMS or fire service education.Current certification as a CPR / BLS Instructor.Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.Work Environment and Physical Requirements :
Classroom, lab, drill ground, clinical, and live-fire training environments.Physical ability to demonstrate and instruct skills, including lifting, climbing, operating firefighting equipment, and working in protective gear.Some evening and weekend hours may be required.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
EMT-Basic Instruction
Deliver classroom and skills instruction in accordance with the Missouri Code of State Regulations (19 CSR 30-40.331, 19 CSR 30-40.342) and the U.S. DOT National EMS Education Standards.Serve as the primary instructor and be present for at least 80% of all class sessions, as required by Missouri regulation.Provide lectures, demonstrations, simulations, and supervised clinical / field experiences.Evaluate student performance in cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.Maintain accurate student records, attendance, and evaluation documentation.Ensure that students are adequately prepared for the National Registry and Missouri EMT certification examinations.Participate in state-required workshops related to curriculum updates, instructional methodology, and skills requirements.Firefighting Instruction
Provide classroom, drill ground, and live-fire instruction aligned with Missouri Division of Fire Safety requirements and NFPA 1001 (Firefighter I & II) standards.Instruct and evaluate students in core firefighting knowledge and skills, including fire behavior, equipment use, rescue operations, hazardous materials awareness, and safety procedures.Conduct written and practical skills assessments consistent with state certification testing requirements.Maintain compliance with safety regulations during all training evolutions, including live-fire exercises.Prepare, maintain, and inspect training equipment and facilities.Support student success through mentoring, guidance, and remediation when needed.Performance Indicators
