Job description

We are sharing a specialised full-time opportunity for senior insurance and actuarial professionals with substantial experience across underwriting, claims, pricing, reserving, risk management, reinsurance, or other core insurance functions.

This role supports advanced research focused on improving how AI systems reason through complex insurance and actuarial work. Selected professionals will review realistic insurance tasks and outputs, develop authoritative reference solutions and instructions, and translate practical industry judgement into rigorous standards for professional-quality decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Insurance & Actuarial Quality Review

  • Evaluate insurance and actuarial tasks for accuracy, completeness, and professional realism
  • Review outputs for flawed assumptions, incorrect calculations, missing considerations, and misapplied policy language
  • Identify responses that appear plausible but would not withstand professional insurance or actuarial scrutiny
  • Assess whether conclusions are properly supported by underlying data, policy terms, and applicable methodologies
  • Apply senior-level judgement across complex insurance scenarios

Pricing, Reserving & Risk Analysis

  • Develop and review problems involving pricing, reserving, profitability, and risk assessment
  • Evaluate actuarial assumptions, methodologies, and calculations
  • Review scenarios involving loss development, reserve adequacy, experience analysis, and portfolio performance
  • Assess whether quantitative conclusions are internally consistent and professionally defensible
  • Apply practical understanding of actuarial governance and review processes

Underwriting & Policy Evaluation

  • Develop realistic underwriting scenarios involving risk selection, policy terms, coverage, and pricing
  • Review interpretation and application of insurance policy language
  • Evaluate underwriting decisions across individual risks and broader portfolios
  • Identify missing exclusions, conditions, endorsements, or risk considerations
  • Translate real underwriting judgement into clear evaluation standards

Claims & Adjudication

  • Review scenarios involving claims investigation, coverage assessment, liability, and settlement decisions
  • Evaluate whether claims conclusions follow policy terms and available evidence
  • Identify incomplete investigations, unsupported conclusions, or missing escalation steps
  • Develop reference solutions reflecting professional claims-handling standards
  • Apply practical knowledge of claims operations and portfolio management where relevant

Life, Health, P&C & Reinsurance

  • Contribute specialised expertise across areas such as:
    • Life and annuity
    • Group life and disability
    • Property and casualty
    • Health insurance
    • Reinsurance
    • Enterprise risk management
  • Develop domain-specific scenarios reflecting real-world insurance workflows
  • Evaluate quantitative and qualitative reasoning within the relevant speciality
  • Ensure tasks accurately represent industry terminology, processes, and professional standards

Instruction & Reference Solution Development

  • Write detailed task instructions that reflect authentic insurance workflows
  • Produce high-quality reference solutions to complex insurance and actuarial problems
  • Define what constitutes a complete, technically sound, and professionally credible response
  • Translate tacit insurance judgement into explicit and teachable criteria
  • Develop new tasks based on practical industry decision-making

Quality Standards & Calibration

  • Collaborate with research teams and specialists from adjacent domains
  • Help maintain consistent standards across insurance-related evaluation work
  • Identify recurring weaknesses and failure patterns in model outputs
  • Refine evaluation criteria based on performance and review findings
  • Contribute domain expertise to the development of new insurance-focused research workflows

Ideal Profile

  • 4+ years of substantive insurance experience at a carrier, reinsurer, broker, adjusting firm, insurance regulator, or comparable organisation
  • One of the following professional backgrounds:
    • Actuarial credential such as FSA, ASA, FCAS, or ACAS
    • Active state insurance licence in adjusting, underwriting, broking, or a comparable insurance function
  • Actuarial professionals should have an academic background in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or a related quantitative field
  • Demonstrated specialist expertise in at least one area such as life and annuity, group life and disability, property and casualty, health, reinsurance, pricing and reserving, enterprise risk management, claims adjudication, or underwriting
  • Clear progression into senior responsibility, such as Actuary, Senior Actuary, AVP, Director, Chief Actuary, Claims Manager, Head of Underwriting, or comparable level
  • Demonstrated ownership of a book of business, reserve, claims portfolio, underwriting portfolio, or significant insurance function
  • Practical experience using large language models in professional workflows
  • Strong judgement when distinguishing rigorous analysis from superficially plausible conclusions
  • Excellent written communication and ability to provide precise, structured feedback

Engagement Details

  • Full-time role
  • Hybrid — Bay Area, California
  • Expected commitment of 40 hours per week
  • Initial engagement of approximately 6 months
  • Compensation: $50–$90/hour
  • Candidates must live in the Bay Area and be available to work on-site with the assigned team multiple days per week when required
  • Candidates not currently based in the Bay Area must be willing to relocate there at their own expense before the engagement begins
  • Relocation assistance is not provided
  • Client-issued accounts and equipment may be provided for work within designated systems and workflows
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on organisational needs and performance
