Position Description

The Department of Community, Family, and Addiction Sciences in the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, assistant professor of practice position in the Counseling and Addiction Recovery Sciences (CARS) undergraduate program, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2026. We welcome all applicants with demonstrated effectiveness as teachers, who possess clinical or teaching experience in mental health or addiction recovery counseling and have a record of professional service.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate strong records of teaching in counseling, addiction, recovery sciences, or other related mental health fields, as well as have experience with teaching online courses and working with diverse student populations and first-generation students.

About the Department / School / Area

The mission of the Department of Community, Family, and Addiction Sciences (CFAS) is to prepare future professionals to enrich the lives of others utilizing a systemic perspective. To this end, the CFAS Department is home to programs specifically focused on empowering students to develop skills in counseling, addiction and recovery, licensed mental health practice, and applying a scientist-practitioner approach to producing meaningful scholarship. The CFAS Department is home to highly regarded programs, including the Counseling and Addiction Recovery Sciences (CARS) undergraduate degree program, master's and doctoral degree programs in Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy (CMFT), and a doctoral degree program in Addictive Disorders and Recovery Sciences (ADRS). Major / Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and / or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research / creative activity, and service.

Faculty Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in a field related to mental health counseling (e.g., couple and family therapy, addictive disorders and recovery studies, psychology, counseling), or a closely related mental health profession at time of appointment
  • Evidence of effectiveness as a teacher
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and / or graduate courses
  • Possess clinical or teaching experience in mental health or addiction recovery counseling
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate students in academic, professional and research pursuits.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply :

  • Experience with teaching online courses
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students
  • Possession of a mental health practitioner license (e.g., LMFT, Licensed Psychologist, LCSW, LPC, LCDC)
  • Possession of AAMFT Clinical Membership and Approved Supervisor designation, APA Membership, NADAAC Membership, NASW Membership, or ACA Membership
  • Experience with student recruitment and retention efforts.
