Job description

MPF Federal is hiring a Mid-Level Animal Care Technician that will be responsible for the daily care, handling, and maintenance of animals. The technician will follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the health and well-being of animals, maintain facility cleanliness, and support research operations. This position requires attention to detail, adherence to regulatory standards, and the ability to work both independently and within a team.

This is a fully onsite position with some weekend and holiday work as needed.

Compensation : $17.75 per hour.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily animal health checks and promptly report any concerns to veterinary staff or supervisors.
  • Provide appropriate animal care for rodents and aquatic species , including cage changing, feeding, and watering according to SOPs and schedules.
  • Conduct animal handling, restraint, and sexing as required for weaning and facility operations.
  • Maintain accurate animal census sheets , facility logs, and other relevant documentation.
  • Clean and sanitize animal rooms, caging, and equipment per established protocols.
  • Receive and properly handle incoming animal shipments.
  • Operate and maintain facility equipment to ensure a safe and clean working environment.
  • Adhere to all animal welfare guidelines and regulations, ensuring compliance with institutional policies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management and veterinary personnel .

Work Environment

  • The position involves exposure to laboratory animals, cleaning agents, and research environments .
  • This position is 100% on site and will include weekends, and / or holidays as needed.
  • Usual hours for this role are 7 : 00am until 4 : 00pm (Monday through Friday) and from 7 : 00am until Noon if scheduled during a weekend or holiday.
  • Employees must adhere to biosafety and facility protocols at all times.
  • Requirements

    Education :

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification :

  • Must have or obtain Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification or within one year of hire .
  • Experience & Skills :

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in animal care , preferably in a laboratory or research setting.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks , including lifting up to 50 lbs , bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for prolonged periods.
  • Basic understanding of animal husbandry, sanitation procedures, and handling techniques .
  • Experience with Aquatic species .
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail .
  • Ability to follow written protocols and verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working in a research or veterinary setting is preferred .
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • ALAT certification after 1 year of hire.
  • Experience in a research animal facility .
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance standards related to animal research.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment .
