The City of Roanoke is looking to engage with our at-risk youth, ages ages 14-18 to participate in our apprenticeship under the umbrella of our Star City Safe initiative. This initiative is focused on expanded services to keep our youth and neighborhoods safe. Part of this initiative allows at-risk youth thru our Rapid Engagement of Support in the Event of Trauma (RESET) program to join our city team in a paid opportunity. Through the Teen Apprenticeship, teens will have the opportunity to learn and develop practical skills, participate in classes and workshops on and offsite, learn job skills in various departments to include : Libraries, Parks & Recreation, Technology, Berglund Center, Fleet, Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke Valley Resource Authority and the Fire Department while observing all health and safety codes, completing assignments, as well as interacting with city leaders, and citizens. Participants should be team orientated, organized, flexible, and willing to assist wherever possible.
To be successful as an apprentice, you must be able to develop great time management and customer service skills and be willing to learn. Outstanding apprentices are those who respond well to feedback, build good relationships with colleagues, and ultimately make a lasting impression.

The starting pay for the Teen Apprenticeship is $15.00. This position is part-time not to exceed 32 hours per week.
- Mandatory Training (Every Thursday - October 17th thru December 5th - 4 : 30 P.M. - 7 : 30 P.M.)
- Upon successful completion of training, student will be placed to work within a city department from December 16th 2024 to January 31st 2025 at 32 hours a week.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
