Job Description
Job Description
We are looking for a compassionate and experienced art therapist to utilize art and psychotherapeutic techniques to help pediatric patients and their families improve their physical, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing. The art therapist’s responsibilities include evaluating patients’ reactions and behaviors during art therapy sessions, attending Interdisciplinary team meetings, and ensuring that art supplies and equipment are adequately stocked.
The Pediatric Palliative Care Network (PPCN) is designed to meet the needs of children with life limiting illnesses and their families in the Plymouth, Norfolk and Bristol county service areas.
This is a 12-hour per week position with flexible hours.
Responsibilities include :
- Travel to patient homes to plan, organize, and direct medically prescribed art activities.
- Conduct art therapy sessions with patients / families using various types of visual art, including drawing, sculpting, painting, ceramics, clay modeling, pretend play, guided imagery, progressive relaxation, and mindfulness
- Discuss patients’ artworks with them to evaluate the meaning and emotions behind the artworks.
- Develop personalized treatment plans for patients and / or siblings based on their needs, objectives, and preferred forms of artistic expression.
- Teach patients coping skills and strategies to enable them to deal with challenging and traumatic experiences.
- Conduct group or family art therapy sessions as needed.
- Document patient activity and progress in EMR
- Consult with parents to discuss their child’s medical histories and identify the problems or conditions they wish to overcome.
- Understand the dying process and manage the emotional impact of working with the dying and bereaved.
- Communicate regularly with the Pedi Pal Program Manager to feedback progress or concerns regarding any aspect of clinical work and to structure workload appropriately.
- Participate in weekly IDT meetings and report on managing the goals of care for patient and family.
- Clinical expertise and competency in the practice of standard precautions and Agency infection control practices
- Help bring quality of life to our Pedi-Pal Patients
- Have a strong understanding of conditions, causes and treatments of a variety of disorders.
- Proficiency with computers, Zoom and healthcare databases.
- Verbal and written communication skills needed to communicate clearly, effectively, and patiently on the phone and in email / text messages.
- Therapist must confirm appointment with families within a 24-hour period. If family cancels after confirmation is made, therapist may bill $50.00 for a missed visit.
