DESCRIPTION OF WORK :

The Office of the Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives seeks a candidate for the position of Digital Communications Assistant. Reporting to the House Chief of Staff, the Digital Communications Assistant will be a principal communicator between the House Leader / House Republican Caucus and the news media. He or she will pitch stories, respond to reporter inquiries, develop and implement social media campaigns, and help develop the House's message about relevant policies and legislation.

The Digital Communications Assistant will also serve as a Content Creator for the Office of the Speaker who will work closely with members to produce engaging and high-quality multimedia content tailored for their social media platforms and newsletters. Responsibilities include creating graphics, shooting and editing videos, capturing photos, and designing posts that effectively communicate legislative priorities and achievements to constituents. This role requires staying informed about legislative developments and using that knowledge to craft timely and impactful visual messaging. The assistant ensures that all content aligns with each member's brand and adheres to established communication guidelines. They manage project timelines, track analytics to measure the impact of content, and adjust strategies as needed. A successful candidate thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and demonstrates creativity and precision in every aspect of their work.

The Digital Communications Assistant must be honest, organized, accountable, and possess exceptional written and verbal communications skills. He or she will be expected to solve problems and execute communications projects with direction from the Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications. He or she must also be able to develop strong working relationships with policy staff and with reporters.

Examples of Duties :

  • Transform complex legislation, public policy, and legal documents into easy-to-understand communications materials.
  • Draft social media content, press releases, talking points, FAQs, newsletters, op-eds, speeches, letters, letters-to-the-editor, and other written deliverables on a wide scope of issues.
  • Respond to press inquiries on tight deadlines while multitasking on other projects.
  • Prepare House Speaker and other Representatives for media interviews and press conferences and provide general communications advice.
  • Independently identify opportunities to advance a message.
  • Perform these and other duties as assigned with a high degree of skill, attention to detail, and independence.

  • Management Prefers :

  • Graphic Design Expertise : Proficiency with tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro) and Canva.
  • Video and Photography Skills : Experience in filming, editing, and producing professional-quality video and photo content.
  • Social Media Management : Knowledge of platform-specific best practices and trends for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok.
  • Storytelling Ability : Strong visual and written storytelling skills to simplify complex legislative topics for public consumption.
  • Time Management : Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet strict deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Attention to Detail : Accuracy in design, formatting, and ensuring all materials align with brand standards and legislative policies.
  • Adaptability : Capability to pivot and respond quickly to legislative updates or breaking news.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :

    Required Education and Experience :

  • College to master's degree.
  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends, as needed, while the House is in session.
  • Public relations and communications experience strongly preferred, but not necessarily required.
