Dean of Students Position Description
Position :
The Dean of Students establishes an atmosphere of respect and structure within the school that is conducive to learning. The Dean of Students coordinates all phases of policy implementation related to student discipline and decorum as well as campus safety and security. This includes responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day monitoring and enforcement of school rules and regulations; ensuring the safety and security of the school campus; and assisting teachers in the development of positive relationships, including utilizing restorative practices to enhance positive community relationships.
Serving as a facilitator, resource and leader, the Dean of Students will report directly to and provide professional assistance to the Vice Principal and will be a member of the School Life team.
Responsibilities : Campus Safety
Responsible for all programs associated with Crisis Management.
Develops all emergency and general safety protocols (policies, procedures, and communications) with the goal of establishing a safe and orderly environment. This includes earthquake, fire, natural disaster, and lockdown emergency plans.
Trains all members of the school community in the above-mentioned protocols..
Monitors the campus during the school day to ensure the safety and security of students, teachers, staff, and visitors, including the removal of unauthorized non-students from the campus.
Trains faculty and staff in procedures for intruder situations or other emergencies; the use of school safety and security equipment (emergency notification system, fire extinguishers, etc); and any other campus safety items as needed.
Monitors school safety and security equipment.
Acts as the school’s Incident Commander in case of a natural disaster, fire, lockdown, or other emergency.
Maintains an up-to-date emergency evacuation plan for the school, including maintaining and conducting regular inventories of emergency medical and survival supplies.
Oversees posting and maintenance of evacuation maps and routes.
Conducts fire, earthquake and lockdown drills as needed.
Controls radio, burglar, fire, and lock systems.
Collaborates with St. Joseph Elementary School and parish on all campus safety issues, including the organization of emergency drills.
Assists with faculty supervision and lunch responsibilities.
Maintains SJND’s Share 911 system (in coordination with the Alameda Police Department).
Maintains an up-to-date wireless campus communication system used by school administrators in both emergency and day-to-day operations.
Provides budget recommendations for campus safety and security programs.
Oversees the Emergency Preparedness budget.
Community Environment
Upholds and models a moral code which is consistent with the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church and the mission of the school.
Partners with the Counseling Staff to analyze discipline data and design and implement restorative practices processes and systems.
Provides coaching, training, strategies, and support for faculty and staff in implementing and using restorative practices.
Addresses referrals from teachers and staff about students whose behavior warrants immediate attention and action. Does so in a direct and timely manner.
Responsible for the overall discipline program, including assigning consequences and infractions when needed.
Conducts extended and weekend detentions as necessary.
Advises and assists students, parents, and teachers on issues relating to student behavior.
Serves as a resource for the Pilot Parent program, including educating parents on relevant adolescent issues and strategies.
Monitors and enforces school dress code.
Keeps and maintains accurate student discipline records.
Provides monthly reports to the Principal regarding attendance, discipline, and any trends or themes in these areas.
Supervises the main office in administration of emergency cards, health cards, and immunization records for all students and develops health plans for students as necessary.
Administers the process of student suspension, including the notification of parents and all necessary school personnel.
Collaborates with counselors, including monitoring the progress of students who have been referred for academic or behavioral issues and developing and implementing programs that support student wellness and safety.
Develops and implements data-driven practices for identifying, placing, and monitoring students in support services.
Leads the Disciplinary Review Board on all disciplinary cases that may result in student suspension or expulsion.
Articulates, interprets, administers, and directs the revision of school policies and procedures as published in the Student-Parent Handbook revision, in consultation with the Principal.
Participates in ongoing professional development and education on discipline trends, pitfalls, possible litigation opportunities, and best practices.
Supervises evening co-curricular events, including graduation events.
Assists with summer school responsibilities.
Supervises and creates attendance accounting procedures, including the maintenance of student attendance records, approval of early dismissals, excusing of students who are ill, contacting parents of students who are absent and do not call in, and supervising the work of the attendance office.
Enforces student and employee car registration, parking procedures, and regulations.
Assigns lockers to students and monitors their use.
Serves as school liaison with local law enforcement officials in matters regarding student behavior.
Works with city and neighborhood groups in order to maintain good relations between the school and Alameda.
Ensures that all student discipline policies and procedures, and decisions made in these areas, reflect the Catholic mission of the school.
This position will also be responsible for special projects and additional responsibilities as needed and as determined by the Principal.
Skills / Qualifications :
Preferred Bachelor’s degree, along with 5 years of successful high school teaching experience.
Salary is commensurate with experience level ranging from $75,000 to $120,000.
