About the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) fulfills its land-grant mission to educate students through its Office of Academic Programs, seeks new knowledge through the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, and extends educational programs throughout the state through NC State University Extension. These teaching, research and extension functions are integrated within the College’s 12 departments.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State leads partnership-driven discovery, learning and engagement. We prepare students, create and apply unbiased knowledge through advances in science and technology and drive economic development to improve the quality of life in North Carolina, our nation and the world. We fulfill the land-grant mission by embracing an interdisciplinary approach to achieve new scientific breakthroughs that translate into discoveries and meet grand challenges involving food, farming, fiber, feed, families, health, energy, water and the environment.
North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service (NCCES)
Established in 1914, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service (NCCES) is the local and statewide outreach provider of North Carolina’s research enterprise, delivering research-based agricultural, food and youth programs for all North Carolinians. The Extension Service, local governments and N.C. A&T State University’s Cooperative Extension Program partner together and NCCES exists to deliver trusted, research-based information that enriches the lives, land and economy of North Carolinians. There is an Extension office working to help individuals and communities thrive in each of the state’s 100 counties, the Plants for Human Health Institute, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee.
Extension affects the lives of millions of North Carolina residents. It supports the state’s #1 industry, agriculture, and works with organizations and businesses of all types, ranging from small farms selling locally to international firms with a global reach. Extension supports communities, businesses, families and individuals, helping all to achieve economic, societal and intellectual prosperity.
The Extension Service partners with agriculture, business, education, government and industry to create a unique culture of collaboration that increases productivity and fuels economic development. As NC State’s largest outreach function and the largest non-formal educational outreach organization in the 17-campus UNC system, Extension is an international model for excellence in non-formal community-based education.
Essential Job Duties :
The CALS Associate Dean & Director has primary leadership responsibility for all aspects of NC State University’s Cooperative Extension portfolio. The incumbent reports to the Dean of CALS. As Associate Dean, the candidate will serve with the Senior Associate Dean of Administration, the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and the Associate Dean & Director of NC Agricultural Research Service as a member of the Dean’s administrative team. The Associate Dean and Director leads NC State’s Extension Service at the state, regional, national and international levels, and NC State Extension includes faculty and staff from the CALS, College of Design, College of Natural Resources and the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University.
The Associate Dean and Director works closely with the other Deans & Directors of the College, and the heads of 12 academic departments, to provide research solutions, training and educational information that will enhance the lives of Extension clients. Local partners provide funding, space and support to Extension in all 100 counties, the Plants for Human Health Institute, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee. NC State Extension faculty and staff are the primary educators serving a variety of state clientele to improve their quality of life, economics and environment.
Because of the strong alignment with University programs, the incumbent will be eligible for an “at will” secondary appointment as the NC State University Vice Provost for Outreach & Engagement. In this supplemental role, the position will report to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at NC State University. The mission of this office to do “outreach and engagement” to the people and places that surround us. The new University strategic plan, Wolfpack 2030 : Powering the Extraordinary, calls for NC State University to “expand and advance our engagement with and service to North Carolina and beyond, defining the standard for a 21st century land-grant university.” To that end the Vice Provost of Outreach and Engagement works with our community partners so as to strengthen our teaching, research, and public service and help us fulfill our land grant mission to make our knowledge more accessible to the public. In essence, this role amplifies the role of Extension beyond the agricultural life sciences mission of the university and, also, beyond the boundaries of the state.
You Belong Here! At NC State, our goal is for all employees to reach their fullest potential at work. As you consider this opportunity, we encourage you to review our Employee Value Proposition ( https : / / news.hr.ncsu.edu / you-belong-here / ) and learn more about what makes NC State the best place to learn and work for everyone.
