Dean of Students at Rise Academy is the East End’s own fully-accredited, private, Christian high school. Rise Academy is part of Rise Richmond, a nonprofit serving students and families in Richmond’s East End. Together with families, neighbors, and community partners, Rise Richmond is creating a world where students have access to excellent, equitable learning opportunities. Through Rise After School, Rise Academy, and vocational education, we offer supportive spaces where students can rise to new opportunities, pursue goals that once seemed out of reach, and exceed their expectations.

Dean of Students is a full-time supervisory position that is part of the Rise Academy school administrative team.The Dean of Students is responsible for overseeing student conduct, ensuring a safe and respectful school environment, and supporting the overall social and emotional well-being of students. This position works closely with teachers, administrators, the counselor, and parents to foster positive behavior, academic success, and a positive school culture.The incumbent will serve as primary backup to the Principal and will lead student focused school functions. The Dean of Students reports to the Principal and supervises the Athletic Coordinator, Administrative Coordinator, and School Counselor.

Essential Duties

  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates the work of the athletic director, administrative coordinator, and school counselor.
  • Student Behavior Management and Discipline

Enforces the school’s code of conduct and discipline policies.

  • Addresses student behavioral issues through interventions, restorative practices, and consequences.
  • Works alongside the school counselor to assist students on personal, academic, and behavioral challenges.
  • Coordinate and oversee student detentions, suspensions, and other disciplinary actions.
  • Serves as a mediator in resolving conflicts between students or between students and faculty.
  • Student Support
  • Works with students who are experiencing academic or emotional challenges, helping them to improve behavior and performance.

  • Develops academic, attendance, and behavior plans as needed
  • Leads weekly attendance meetings
  • Collaboration with Faculty and Staff :
  • Collaborates with teachers and staff to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.

  • Communicates with teachers and staff about students on, academic, attendance, and / or behavior plans.
  • Assists with the implementation of school-wide behavior management programs.
  • Provides support to staff on strategies for managing student behavior and fostering positive relationships with students.
  • Collaborates with the athletic director to ensure athletic programs run efficiently.
  • Parental Involvement :
  • Maintains consistent and positive communication with parents / guardians regarding student behavior, academic progress, and any disciplinary actions.

  • Holds conferences with parents, students, and staff to develop behavior, attendance, and / or academic plans.
  • Serves as a support to parents about school policies, procedures, and resources available to support their children.
  • Crisis Management
  • Leads the school safety plan

  • Responds to emergency situations involving students, including medical emergencies, emotional crises, or safety concerns.
  • Assists in the management of emergency drills and crisis response plans.
  • Testing and Data Administration
  • Leads and organizes NWEA Testing Administration

  • Analyzes NWEA Testing  data and tracks student data trends
  • Hosts data driven follow up meetings with staff about students testing performance.
  • Transportation Coordination
  • Leads the coordination with transportation to update students information and student enrollment changes

  • Informs the transportation of school closures, early releases, or inclement weather.
  • Work with Athletics to schedule transposition for athletic teams
  • Other Administrative Duties
  • Report on student conduct issues to the principal and Executive Director / Head of School as needed.

  • Assists the principal and Head of School / Executive Director and other school leaders in the overall administration of the school.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development, and other required events.
  • May supervise students during lunch or other non-instructional times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the school principal.
  • Attends and participates in student enrollment and admissions
  • Leads and manages weekly Chapel alongside Principal

  • Required Qualifications

  • Faith in Jesus Christ, affirming the Apostles’ Creed and lived out in a faith community
  • A bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in K-12 Education or a related field, of which at least 2 years consists of K-12 classroom teaching experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and command of the English language
  • Strong project management skills with flexibility to manage multiple projects, adapt to change, and deliver on time
  • Significant experience leading in underserved communities and communities of color, with demonstrated cultural competency in leadership and approach to education.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree or other advanced certification in educational leadership or school administration.
  • At least 1 year in K-12 administrative leadership role
  • Experience in high school or upper school
  • Position Overview & Compensation

  • Full time, minimum 40 hours
  • Exempt from overtime
  • Hourly rate or Anticipated hiring range : $60,000 to 65,000

  • Work Schedule : General Schedule is 8 : 20 AM to 4 : 00 PM, Monday - Friday. Special events and meetings outside those hours will be required from time to time.
  • 10 month Employee Would work August to June.
