The Creative Director is responsible for defining and overseeing the overall creative vision for OMSI in collaboration with Brand Marketing and Learning Experience teams, leading the Creative Services and Exhibit Research & Development staff in conceptualizing and designing interpretive exhibits and learning experiences, and collaborating with internal and external clients to translate experiential and learning objectives into impactful, inclusive creative concepts, while managing budgets and timelines to achieve project goals.
The Creative Director leads collaborative processes to establish design direction, and manages and facilitates clear processes, milestones, and deliverables for multiple diverse projects, ensuring deliverables meet internal and external client expectations, timelines and budgets. They manage internal and external resources to implement exhibit experiences in gallery halls plans and to support inclusive experience development including research, special design, graphics, technical writing, interactive development, electronics, mechanics, scenic production, audio-visual and lighting systems, artifact mounting and installation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership :
- Leads strategic planning and implementation of OMSI initiatives aligning with our 5-year vision, 20-year vision, and the Equity Action Framework (EAF);
- Leads the Creative Services and Exhibit Research R&D teams to develop interactive experiences and exhibitions that deliver high quality learning experience outcomes, with an emphasis on guiding and providing critique to creative teams throughout visioning, concepting, prototyping, designing, and producing construction documentation for multiple and diverse projects;
- Collaborates with internal and external clients to establish creative direction and clear processes, milestones, and deliverables for multiple diverse projects, and ensures deliverables meet client expectations, timelines and budgets;
- Collaborates with the VP of Learning Experience to plan for, spend, and track monthly subdivision budgets with an expected annual expenditure of $600k, and ensures short- and long-term requirements are met through labor planning, forecasting, and reforecasting;
- Evaluates current practices and stays current with professional standards, exhibit theory, techniques, design processes, and technologies to meet the needs of diverse audiences, and plan for changing needs of the staff and public; Supports continual improvement of processes, tools, training, and best practices in interactive experience and exhibition creation and design while balancing resources;
- Provides grant proposal and sales project direction and input related to establishing project-specific creative direction and clear processes, milestones, and deliverables, including workforce estimates and feedback on budgets for proposals and projects;
- Ensures the proper documentation of learning experiences (e.g. goals, program curriculums, staff training guides, exhibit records) in support of transparency, collaboration, evaluation, succession planning, and dissemination;

REQUIREMENTS :
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on presentation, public speaking, and facilitation skills;
Advanced knowledge of human-centered experience design and interactives;
Ability to conceptualize and explain high-level, big-picture ideas and strategies, then apply them at a tangible, operational level in service of creative professionals as well as learners;
Ability to model and support a positive team dynamic with an emphasis on coaching and mentoring paid and unpaid staff using asset-based feedback;

Demonstrated project management experience, with an emphasis on staff supervision, multiple project management, resourceful problem-solving and adaptability, process improvements, and budget responsibility;
