Department : Andrews Institute

Location : Fairview Specialty Clinic

Shift : Full Time; 40 hours

Additional Information : Shifts to be scheduled within the operating hours of Monday- Friday between the hours of 7 : 00 AM to 6 : 30 PM. Children's Health Specialty Center Fairview is an affiliation with Children's Health Medical Center Plano's Andrew's Institute. Andrew's Insititute will operate a pediatric orthopedic and sports medicine clinic within the specialty center. The specialty center is scheduled to open October 2025 and will offer an inclusive range of orthopedic out-patient care with a focus on fracture care, sports medicine and concussion care.

Summary :

Serve as a physician extender in the primary care, primary care sports medicine, and / or orthopedic clinical setting and specialize in the delivery of high quality health care to patients of all ages and athletes of all skill levels. Promote the Andrews Institute within the Children's Health System within his / her own entity as well as through community outreach initiatives and serve as an integral part of the healthcare delivery team. The Athletic Trainer / Physician Extender will report to assigned physician and practice administrator while performing clinical, front office duties, and others as assigned; Will prevent, assess, and treat emergency, acute, and chronic injuries; Recondition athletes and active individuals after injury to prevent injury recurrence, impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities

Responsibilities :

  • Perform appropriate patient intake for a variety of medical and musculoskeletal conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, thorough history of condition or injury, chief complaint, assessment of pain level, completion and / or review of past medical history, family history social history and medication reconciliation.
  • Perform appropriate physical examination per patient history and chief complaint. This includes but is not limited to palpation of the affected area and unaffected area, range of motion testing, strength testing / manual muscle testing / dynamic muscle testing, myotome / dermatome testing, ligamentous stress testing, or functional testing.
  • At direction of supervising physician, perform appropriate point of care testing and order appropriate diagnostic testing or follow-up care.
  • Actively engage and participate in community outreach initiatives.
  • Support physicians and other clinical / ancillary staff in daily patient care. Casting, bracing and implementation of care plan.
  • Comply with all OSHA and JHACO-issued policies and procedures.
  • Document all aspects of evaluation, testing appropriately within the EMR.
  • Based on patient diagnosis, current activity level and patient care plan goal, collaborates with supervising physician to develop an appropriate plan of care for treatment / interventions.
  • Uses current best practices for concussion evaluation and management.
  • Collaborates with supervising physician to develop a specific musculoskeletal and concussion care plan for each patient that includes academic and physical recommendations based on clinical assessment.
  • Prepares for and assists physician with minor surgical procedures, including preparation of patient treatment site. ATC may also serve as surgical assistant with supervising surgeon if appropriate credentialing and training completed.
  • Triage patient messages, phone calls and questions appropriately. Communicate back to referring provider on behalf of the physician.
  • Manage referrals to specialists and diagnostics tests in a timely manner.
  • Respond to problems / opportunities to improve patient care & customer service.
  • Serve as preceptor to undergraduate athletic training student interns work described herein.

How You'll Be Successful :

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least 2 years Working knowledge of the domains of athletic training : injury / illness prevention and wellness protection, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation, and organizational and professional health and well-being required
  • At least 2 years ATC experience in a sports medicine practice preferred
  • EDUCATION

  • Four-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • NATABOC certification upon hire preferred
  • Athletic Trainer - State of Texas Athletic Trainer license upon hire required
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association required upon hire
