Salary : $24.50 / Hour Minimum

Civil Service Title : Civil Service Title : Senior Automotive Mechanic

Minimum Requirements :

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, plus EITHER :

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Automotive Mechanics, plus one (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid experience as an automotive mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic under the supervision of a journeyman level mechanic including diesel experience; OR,

B) Three (3) years of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid experience as a journeyman level automotive mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic including diesel experience; OR,

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

NOTE : Journeyman level experience refers to skilled mechanical work which would involve maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of all systems : brakes, suspension, cooling, exhaust, electrical, transmission and engine of vehicle equipment.

Where education is below the minimum specified, additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Desired Qualifications :

• Thorough knowledge of hydraulics and diesel and gasoline engines;
• Good knowledge of State Department of Transportation rules and regulations governing the repair and maintenance of buses;
• Ability to diagnose problems of all systems, diesel engine, air brakes, and hydraulics;
• Possess valid CDL-B with PS Endorsement by the end of probationary period;
• Minimum of five years experience in school bus or heavy truck repairs and maintenance;
• Good knowledge of the principles of heavy equipment mechanics including systems and parts operations, systems and parts interrelationships, and systems and parts functions;
• Good knowledge of the methods and practices involved in repairs to heavy equipment;
• Good knowledge of shop equipment, tools, electronic diagnostic equipment, parts and their potential use;
• Working knowledge of the mechanical operation and terminology of school buses;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervision, and District administration.
