There are two (2) openings in our Aviation Building Department. As a Building Inspector / Plans Examiner, you will perform plan review and inspections used to regulate airport construction projects to ensure that they comply with state and local codes. You will also communicate with stakeholders from the project concept to completion.

  • You will compile a comprehensive list of plan review comments, including relative code citations, for permit applicants.
  • You will inspect permitted projects for compliance with approved building plans, specifications, and related codes and standards, sometimes at non-ordinary hours. You will also compile correction notices to clearly convey deficiencies.
  • You will attend preapplication and preconstruction meetings to help guide stakeholders through the design process by informing them of code requirements. You will also explain significant concerns and issues, listen and respond to stakeholder input.
  • You will communicate with Airport Building Department (ABD) staff regarding project status.
  • You will maintain knowledge of other airport construction projects so you can substitute for inspections, if needed.
  • You will be an accurate source of information and knowledge of Port policies, relevant codes, timelines, and any ABD related areas of expertise to stakeholders.
  • You will provide emergency preparedness / Emergency Operations Center (EOC) assistance including fire and life safety rapid evaluation of structures after significant events.

Who you are :

  • Experienced - You have four (4) years of experience in building inspections and / or plan review.
  • Desired - We hope you have International Code Council (ICC) certifications (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing Plans examiner and / or Inspector)

  • Efficient Communicator - You can effectively interact with a variety of clients, customers, and employees in a professional manner. You are able to write clear and concise plan review comments and inspection correction notices, citing code sections, and are able to convey this information to designers, contractors, and other stakeholders during online and in-person meetings.
  • Knowledgeable - You have knowledge and understanding of the ICC family of codes and standards and the International Accessibility Standard A117.1. You have knowledge of engineering and architectural design principles, practices, and procedures and have knowledge and understanding of the Uniform Plumbing Code. You also have technical knowledge of a variety of construction operations, methods, materials, and related hazards.
  • Technically Skilled - You are proficient with a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Accela, Bluebeam software and SharePoint.
  • Strategic & Detail-oriented - You have attention to detail and high level of accuracy and can use code logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to code related issues.
  • What else you need to know :

  • Driver's License - You will need a valid Washington State Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to project sites.
  • Work Schedule - Your normal work schedule will be Monday - Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You may be required to work any and all assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays. You may be required to work during emergencies.
  • Work Environment - The majority of the work will primarily be in office and out in the field. There may be times where you can work remote, but this will be at Management's discretion. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights and / or in confined spaces.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement - Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Safety Requirements - You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Security Requirements - As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
