Job Summary : Nature of work :
The associate medical director of the Blood Bank / Transfusion Medicine Service is a permanent full-time position in the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, Department of Pathology, based at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) Blood Bank on the Anschutz Medical Campus. This position is designed to be a clinical pathology practice opportunity for an academic clinical pathologist with expertise in transfusion medicine and blood banking, including apheresis. The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of clinical medicine, basic medical sciences, clinical laboratory sciences, and laboratory operations.
Key Responsibilities :
- Medical significance, interpretation and correlation of data - provide consultations about the medical significance of clinical laboratory results. Interpret, correlate and communicate clinical laboratory results to clinical providers.
- Consultations - Provide consultations to physicians regarding the appropriateness of blood / product transfusion, proper selection of the type and dose of blood components, and the medical significance of laboratory findings. Provide consultations regarding the appropriateness of the type and schedule for clinical apheresis procedures.
- Medical Staff Privileges - serve as an active member of the medical staff of University Hospital.
- Interaction with others - Relate and function effectively with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies, appropriate administrative officials, the medical community, the medical device industry, and the patient and donor populations served.
- Standards of performance - Define, implement, and monitor standards of performance in quality control, quality improvement, and cost-effectiveness of the clinical laboratory and apheresis services. Exemplify professional conduct, including appropriate oral and written communications and adherence to policies of UCHealth and the School of Medicine.
- Monitoring and correlation of clinical data - Monitor all work performed in the transfusion service and apheresis service to determine that medically reliable results are being generated; correlate laboratory findings for diagnosis and patient and donor management.
- Quality improvement responsibilities - Assume responsibility for maintenance of the quality improvement plan. The section directors and professional laboratory personnel should participate as members of the various institutional quality improvement teams.
- Personnel - Educate and mentor qualified personnel with adequate documented training and experience to meet the needs of the laboratory, the apheresis service, and the institution.
- Strategic Planning - Participate in setting goals and developing and allocating resources appropriate to the medical environment.
- Administrative and Management Responsibilitie s - Provide effective and efficient administration of the clinical laboratory service and apheresis service with responsible financial management in accordance with institutional assignment of such responsibilities.
- Educational Responsibilities - Provide educational programs for the medical, nursing, and laboratory staff and participate in the educational programs of the institution and of the School of Medicine.
- Research and Development Responsibilities - Plan and conduct scholarly activity, including research and development appropriate to the facility.
- Safety - Implement a safe laboratory and apheresis environment in compliance with good practice and appropriate regulations.
- Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Laboratory Medical Director or Section Medical Director.
The Blood Bank / Transfusion Medicine Associate Medical Director will work closely with the Blood Bank / Transfusion Medicine Section Medical Director and other Associate Medical Directors, section Manager, Lead Technologists, Technical Specialist, Apheresis Coordinator, Laboratory Manager, and Laboratory Medical Director to ensure optimal quality and patient and donor care in a constructive atmosphere.

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Anticipated Pay Range :
The starting salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established as :
Assistant Professor - $220,000 to $260,000
Associate Professor - $260,000 to $300,000
Professor - $300,000 to $340,000
The above salary range ( or hiring range ) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
