Job description

Position Details

The Position

Qualified candidates will have the knowledge and skills necessary to assist individuals, groups, and systems through the application of positive behavior supports. The Behavior Intervention Coach supports the implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) that address students’ behaviors that impact instruction, dignity, or safety, and provide a means to support students to become more academically successful and functionally independent. The Behavior Intervention Coach also provides support to classrooms and school-wide behavior management strategies. Bachelor’s degree in social work, sociology, and / or psychology preferred. ABA technician certification preferred, but not required. Experience working with at-risk and / or behaviorally challenged students preferred.

The Behavior Intervention Coach works collaboratively with key support staff members to provide leadership and direction with the implementation of behavior support programs. In addition, the Behavior Intervention Coach works directly and diligently with identified students to adopt behaviors that substantially increase their academic performance and functional independence. Under the supervision of the building administration and the school social worker, the Behavior Intervention Coach will provide diversified strategies and activities specifically designed for targeted students. Behavior coaches will work primarily with elementary aged students. Behavior Coaches will be assigned to (1) designated elementary building with possibility of supporting secondary students as needed based on staff referral

Responsibilities

  • Data collection
  • Supporting students in crisis using de-escalation strategies for calming purposes.
  • Assisting in the classroom transition process when a new student starts in the classroom and / or program.
  • Helping new students learn the classroom routines and procedures
  • Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS).
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge / skills.
  • Assist staff in defining and measuring behavior, understanding principles of reinforcement, teaching new behavior, implementing strategies for weakening unwanted behavior, and identifying antecedents.
  • Consult with the school social worker, building administrator, teachers, and paraprofessionals.
  • Organize and schedule time commitments to meet demands of the job.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures; report all unsafe activities to supervisor and / or Human Resource.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve District, building, departmental and / or grade level goals.
  • Knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies that focuses on reducing problem behaviors and increasing positive behaviors.
  • Knowledge of techniques needed to successfully implement Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBIS), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Emergency Intervention Plans (EIPs).
  • Exceptional knowledge in the use of data to inform instruction and prescribe work plans for individual students.
  • Knowledge in research based instructional strategies and the ability to implement them effectively.
  • Knowledge in the use of technology to support instruction.
  • Demonstrates ability to plan and evaluate strategies for improving student behavior.
  • Ascribes to the philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates the commitment to do what is necessary to make school success a reality.
  • Demonstrates exceptional skills in the roles of collaborator, action researchers, reflective practitioner, and learner advocate.

This position reports to the Director of Special Education.
